With a new year comes new resolutions. High on our list? Super-green, chia seed-charged healthy eating that hopefully doesn’t break down when we’re back in the land of unlimited dining hall pizza. Here to help is our guide to keeping your diet clean when school starts up again:
Fill up on your fruit and veggies first.
Not always the most exciting thing on your plate, but if you eat them while you’re hungriest, you can get those Brussels sprouts out of the way in no time. Plus, you’ll have no excuse that you’re too full to fit them in!
Be mindful of your food groups.
Picking three of the dining options doesn’t mean much if they’re all carbs. If your school doesn’t offer the healthiest entrees, try making your own by cutting plain chicken breast or fish into your salad.
Choose water.
Soda on the regular is just empty calories and sugar! Make it a point to fill your cup with water—and if you’re craving bubbles, top some sparkling seltzer with lemon or lime.
Don’t count calories—pick whole foods.
Be careful of foods that sell themselves as healthy but are really full of processed junk. Even low-cal foods can stick in your stomach when they’re full of preservatives! Instead, look for whole grains and clean ingredient lists so you know exactly what’s going in your diet and your stomach.
Treat yourself!
Remember that healthy eating isn’t a regime – it’s a lifestyle! Trying to eat clean doesn’t mean you can’t have that slice of birthday cake or the occasional late night burger. Be kind to yourself. If you’re making healthy choices every day, a splurge now and then is no big deal!
Good luck, everyone! Welcome to the new year!
