Staying Healthy for the Unmotivated

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

If you ladies are anything like me, whenever you see a health post of how to get in shape (for any season, really) you may experience a frustration verging on a mini panic attack. NO! Not another post of how to be fit and healthy! If we’re being honest, there is nothing that entices me more than when a post claims that eating a tub of ice cream is the best way to get rid of belly fat (even though the accuracy of such statements is very doubtful). Anyways, since I couldn’t honestly provide a good workout or healthy snacks to keep in your dorm, here is some advice on how to TREAT YO’ SELF because, really, it’s the best way to stay mentally and physically healthy.

For the Snackers: don’t beat yourself up by buying healthy snacks you’re unlikely to eat. First of all, it’s a waste of money and you end up more depressed because you can’t even enjoy your prized snack time which ruins everything! Instead, try buying that delicious junk food in moderation and keeping tabs on when you can go buy more, because if you have to judge when you can splurge then you won’t have as much of a bad influence in your dorm. Also try a “treat sheet” so every time you cross off a task from your planner, phone, whatever, you can have a mini celebration with a snack!

For the Non-exercisers: There is no shame in not wanting to go on a run or a jog of any kind or to go to the Rec Center to be intimidated by all the health buffs. Since the weather outside is getting nicer, try walking up to class both outside and inside – we all know that KU has a PLETHORA of stairs just waiting to put you into cardiac arrest. In all seriousness, though, walking up and down the hill will make an astronomical difference in your leg and lung strength and you’ll find yourself more energized and attentive while in class.

For the Entertainment Hounds: I cannot help but pull up YouTube, BuzzFeed, and Her Campus whenever I have free time instead of heading outside for a walk or attempting to work on homework. What I try to do is use the “treat sheet” effect so every time I finish a homework assignment or whatnot, I take 10 minutes to watch some videos or check the latest online posts. The best part of using a bit of restraint? When you actually finished all your homework during the week and have the entire weekend to binge on some Netflix.

For the Healthy Individuals: Please do not take this post as an insult to your restraint and healthy regimen. Trust me, most ladies DO wish they could actually enjoy eating healthy and exercising the way that you do. As a Disney, dog, and superhero enthusiast I live for the outdoors (particularly my homeland foothills) and the unreal where adventures and the ridiculous are quite obtainable and/or practical.
