Making the Best of Your Senior Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IUP chapter.

If you are anything like me or many other seniors, you cannot wait for graduation to get here. Senioritis is real; a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance. Here a few ways to not let senioritis get the best of you:

1. Take care of yourself. Don’t skip meals. Pack yourself snacks whenever necessary and make time in your schedule to exercise. Being fit and healthy will help you stay mentally on track. Sleep also plays a major part, pulling all-nighters is not healthy.

2. Stay organized. A planner will be your best friend. Time management is very important during college, it will help you manage your academics, work and social life.

3. Get motivated. Yes, senioritis is real but do not let it knock off your game. As a college senior you should be getting your plans together on what you are doing after graduation. “Your motivation at the end of your senior year is a pretty good indication in terms of your motivation for the next stage of your life.”

4. Be realistic. It is very difficult to get hired immediately after graduation or get into graduate school. Do not think that senior year is a time to slack and that your GPA does not matter.

Now, here are some things that as a senior you can do to make the best of your year:

  • Visit your career center
  • Find an internship (I interned in Washington, D.C. for three months and it helped me land a job after graduation in California. Connections are key!)
  • Volunteer (Very often students are able to land jobs with places that they have volunteered for during the school year).
  • Attend career fairs.
  • Find networking events in your area to attend.
  • Schedule meetings with your advisor.

Happy Senior Year! Remember, do not give up. You are almost DONE!
