2013 Greek Awards Recipients!4/27/2013 |
The 2013 Greek Awards took place in Cox Ballroom on Thursday, April 25th. Each chapter nominated members for awards including Best New Member, President, and the Greek Man and Woman of the year. Her Campus Emory would like to honor the winners: Best new members: Tom Ianelli and Janelle Elysee Greek Man and Woman of the Year: Victor Rudo and Catherine Muse President: Dan Bobier and Blair Hunt We caught up with Tri Delta President Blair Hunt after her big win. Here's what she had to say: "It was such an honor to win sorority president of the year. It was really challenging to be a president, but it was also really rewarding having so many girls who constantly had my back. I was so lucky to have such an amazing exec board that listened to each other and really cared about each other and the future of our sorority. I was so impressed by how we were able to bond after crises and take care of things. We were able to honestly talk about the consequences of actions and how they affected us and Emory. I'm so happy with so far we came this semester. Kyle Remy did an amazing job as academic chair, and we really tried to make academics a priority last semester. I'm also really excited about OTC (officers training council), which was comprised of me, Alcie, and Eliza. It was a great idea from Nationals to rethink our personal roles and our general presence on campus." Congratulations Collegiates and Collegiettes!

The PosterFuse Founders4/13/2013 |
Emory juniors Stephanie Chan, Michael Simon, and Denver Rayburn were driving back from lunch during move-in week in August when they began discussing how they had so many photos from their summer vacations, but could not think of a fun way to display them in their apartments. Thus, the three students, who are passionate about entrepreneurship and technology, launched their own start-up, PosterFuse. I spoke with one of the founders, Stephanie, to learn more about her company and its success. Since its launch, PosterFuse has had over 1800 users on its website, and Stephanie and her team have created about 680 20 x 32” posters and 700 Facebook cover photos. While the cover photo template is free for users, PosterFuse charges $22 plus shipping for custom posters that contain the creator’s personal Instagram and Facebook photos. |

After 19 years on the Braves (the only team he has ever played for professionally), Jones retired in 2012 at age 40. His athletic accomplishments include having the most RBIs of any third baseman and being known as one of the best switch-hitters of all time. 2012 and 2013 ISC Presidents, Camille Sheppard and Lauren Browning2/16/2013 |
On bid day 2013, Camille Sheppard passed over the responsibilities of president of Emory’s Intersorority Council to Lauren Browning. HCE interviewed both girls in order to get a behind-the-scenes look at ISC. Camille Sheppard/2012 Camille, a senior from Jacksonville, Florida studying history and sociology, is a member of Alpha Delta Pi and has participated in ISC since her sophomore year. She served as her sorority’s pan-hellenic representative and enjoyed becoming more involved on campus. We asked Camille to specifically discuss the recruitment process. She says she was very happy with the way things went this year, and congratulated Vice President of Recruitment, Jordan Krant, for her efforts in keeping things running smoothly. Due to the larger freshmen class (470 girls signed up for rush) and successful fall recruitment programs (including Novemberfest and Sorority 411), more women participated in recruitment than ever before. Moreover, Sigma Delta Tau did not participate in recruitment, leaving only 6 houses for the potential new members to join. As a result, the pledge classes nearly doubled in size. In response, Camille says, “Obviously this is a large adjustment for the chapters, but this should be seen as a positive step for Greek life at Emory to continue to expand.” Camille is excited to see what the new ISC executive board will do this coming year, and has high hopes for newly elected president, Lauren. She also hopes to stay connected to ISC’s plans, and help whenever she can. |
Jonathan Denmar ’13 of #Emorycuts1/26/2013 |
Have you been affected by Emory’s “phase out” of certain academic programs? Do you want to participate in a movement to protest these changes? Meet Jonathan Denmar—a senior who is double majoring in Music Composition and Journalism, who facilitated the organization of “#EmoryCuts.” According to its Facebook page, #EmoryCuts is “an organization seeking to ‘save’ the Liberal Arts infrastructure at Emory University.” Jonathan adds, “Our mission is to find logical ways of working with the administration to figure out how these cuts could be reversed, and what needs to happen to keep the fundamental programs here at Emory.” We spoke with Jonathan to find out more about his involvement with #EmoryCuts, and the group’s plans for this semester. Originally from New York City, Jonathan chose to attend to Emory because he wanted a liberal arts education. After taking JRNL 201 News Reporting and Writing for his writing requirement, Jonathan discovered his love for Journalism, and chose to make it his major. This fall, following Dean Forman’s September 14, 2012 announcement of departmental closures, Jonathan created social media pages for “#EmoryCuts in order to “get people talking…and promote the idea of a need for liberal arts education and what we can do to improve our school.” Although Jonathan has become the face of this movement, he maintains that many other people are behind this movement and that he is “not the sole leader.” |
Quilt on the Quad 2012 Co-Chairs11/28/2012 |
Two weeks before my freshman year of college, my friend’s cousin, who was a rising junior at Emory, Facebook messaged me to see if I was excited for school. She also asked me if I would like to be a member of the planning committee for the event she was the co-chair of, Quilt on the Quad. I remember typing “Quilt on the Quad” into Google, and being amazed by all of the AIDS Memorial Quilt panels spread across Emory’s quad. I eagerly accepted a spot on the committee, and have continued with my commitment to honor World AIDS Day at Emory through Quilt on the Quad ever since. Now, as a senior, I am thrilled to be co-chairing the 8th annual Quilt on the Quad event with my best friend (and the editor-in-chief of Her Campus), Jessica Jaksich. |

Yuanrun "Z" Zheng '13, Creator of 23Penny Sneaker Shop10/4/2012 |
B-school senior Yuanrun Zheng (better known as Z) has a passion for collecting limited edition sneakers (he personally owns over 300 pairs). In order to maintain this expensive hobby, Z says, “I would just buy five pairs of shoes, sell four on the Internet for above retail prices and keep one for myself, so I basically get a pair for free.” These actions prompted him to leverage his knowledge of the industry and the relationships he formed within the close-knit sneaker community to launch his own website, 23Penny Sneaker Shop. Z says his favorite part about running his own business is interacting with his customers. “This business has really allowed me to network with the rest of the world. I have sold shoes to NFL players, rappers, doctors, etc. Meeting people in different industries and really getting to know them on a personal level is comforting because possibly they could help me with other ventures I pursue in the future.” Nonetheless, running a business comes with plenty of challenges. Z says that while he can easily sell out new shoes in minutes, finding enough inventory to satisfy his eager customers is difficult. And, of course, operating a business while pursuing a rigorous course-load and enjoying college life is not an easy task. Despite the challenges, Z plans on continuing to “push shoes at an affordable price (compared to e-Bay for people)” and hopes to spread awareness of his brand by creating shirts, hats, and accessories with the 23Penny logo. |
