Winter Break Entertainment

12/18/2011

Finals are almost done and all you can think of is walking through your front door at home.  As soon as the car ride is over and you step into your house the big question comes up, “Now what?”. The University of Maryland is extremely generous to give us five and a half weeks off from school, but what are we supposed to do with all that time?  We have crafted a guide to help keep you entertained during those days you just don’t know what to do.

One great way to keep in touch with your friends from school and to give yourself something to do is to start an online book club.  Get together with your friends before you all leave for break and compile a list of books everyone is interested in reading.  Create a schedule for yourselves to decide when to read each book.

The Freezing Point

Once winter hits, all you want to do is bundle up and stay warm from the frigid outdoors.  Luckily there are ways to  maintain your chic style even under all those layers!

  The Flannel:
Its easy and simple, but adds a little personality to a plain outfit of leggings and boots.     The Oversized Sweater:
A big chunky sweater that keeps you warm is always a trendy alternative to an old college sweatshirt and just as comfy!   The Fur Vest:
An easy item to throw on and its the hottest trend for this winter 2011 season.   The Knit Infinity Scarf: No matter the season, a scarf is always a great way to accessorize an outfit and add color.   The Leather Boot:
They keep you warm, and always look good with leggings, jeans or even a skirt!

Maryland Filmmakers Club Winter Screening Dec. 3

11/27/2011

Who:  The students of the University of Maryland and the Maryland Filmmaker’s club have contributed to a rapidly increasing filmmaking society on campus.

What:  The Filmmakers Club invites you to join them for their 2011 Winter film screening of 7 short films produced by UMD students themselves.  An award ceremony with the cast and crew of the films will follow the screening of the films.  For more questions contact the Filmmakers Club at marylandfilmmakersclub@gmail.com.

When: Saturday, December 3, 2011- 5:00-8:00pm

Where:The Hoff Theater located in the Stamp Student Union.

Why HC readers should support this event:  For people who are interested in supporting the arts, the best way to do it is by supporting your fellow classmates.  The members of the Filmmakers Club have work hard this past semester to put together their personal work and would love to get as much exposure as they can.   The event runs between 5 and 8, leaving you ample time before your night out on the Collie Park town while providing you an opportunity to culture yourself.  After all, it is a free event and a chance to watch movies; probably something much better than what is on your Netflix cue.

Essence of Fall

11/7/2011

As the days become shorter and the temperature drops, the smell of autumn begins to fill the air.  What marks fall to most people is the changing color of the leaves.  Suddenly the landscape transforms from a luscious green to an array of red orange and yellow hues. The fall weather hit College Park a few weeks ago, but just this past week I noticed the beautiful changing colors over campus and captured them with my camera.

OccupyUMD- From Wall Street to College Park

11/2/2011

Any movement can be successful; it all starts with just a few people with strong opinions and a desire for change.  There are various things citizens in the United States are unhappy with, most recently, the social and economic inequalities highlighted by the Occupy Wall Street movement. People all over the nation have been keeping up with the movement, but locally, fellow classmates of ours initiated change through the Occupy UMD movement on Oct. 28.

“I want to have an economy to work in when I graduate,” says University of Maryland international business sophomore Ben Green from New York. Green joined the Occupy UMD movement just four days ago and has been attending the general assemblies hosted on McKeldin Mall ever since. (Photo by Fatima Ali)

“I hear criticisms of the movement that people should go out and get jobs rather than protest; that doesn’t apply to me,” Green said. Green is one of the couple students helping to get the movement started on our Maryland Campus.

The movement started on October 7th, when just a few students began to discuss the issues that are taking place currently with the Occupy Wall Street movement.  The group started up as a Facebook page and Twitter account along, furthered by chalking the sidewalks of the school to bring awareness to the campus. Jennifer Fink: Founder of a Non-profit and Children's Book author at Age 19

10/22/2011

At the age of 19, Jennifer Fink has found a passion that led to writing a book, and even starting a non-profit, all while being a regular student at Maryland.

In high school, Fink went through a long time period in and out of bed rest, sick and frustrated with no diagnosis from doctors.  She took this frustration and decided to devote her time to give back to others and ease their pain.  As a high school senior, she took up a one-credit internship class as an intern for the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces at the National Naval Medical Center (military hospital and base).

Here, Fink was part of the Red Cross Medivac team meeting the newly wounded soldiers as they arrived on the Tarmac and helped them and their families during the entirety of their stay at the hospital.  From daily patient visits to the Wounded Warrior and ICU inpatients to helping relieve mothers from watching their children for a few hours, Fink attempted to ease these service members and their families’ stay as much as possible.  What started as an internship soon turned into a 6 hour a day, 6 day a week job where Fink devoted her heart to a cause that she truly felt a passion for.

Mac Miller Concert in Stamp Student Union

10/16/2011

Over 400 students poured into the Stamp Student Union a few weeks ago to hear the rising cultural sensation Mac Miller preform for the fall semester back to school concert.  The artist who toured earlier this past summer with Wiz Khalifa on the Wake and Bake tour was welcomed with a roaring audience.  Tickets to his show sold out one minute after they were released.  Only 400 tickets were for sale, and those 400 were very eager to see the new famed artist.

Her Campus Maryland Sponsor Spotlight- Red Hue Boutique

9/26/2011

What better way to spend a few hours than eat free food and win gift cards to local boutiques?  This past Tuesday, Her Campus invited the women of the University of Maryland to celebrate with them the launch of the UMD branch.  After a successful first semester, Editor-in-Chief Liz Roberts and Marketing Director Jocelyn Rubin were very excited to invite everyone to an evening of fashion and gossip at the Cornerstone loft.

Almost 100 girls gathered to sip on signature Her Campus cocktails of pink lemonade and vodka and nibble on pizza, pasta salad, and a variety of desserts: rocky road cake, cinnamon and chocolate doughnuts and M&M sugar cookies.  The room was covered in pink balloons, and almost everyone was talking about the trendy outfits that were sported to the event that night.

Red Hue Boutique, along with the other two sponsors of the event, generously donated gift cards that were auctioned off towards the end of the evening. The four girls who won the gift cards were ecstatic when they heard their names called! Can you blame them? They had their eyes on some of the items that were featured in a mini display of what the boutique carries in their store.  The items included large brown buckle belts, trendy necklaces, and some very chic shirts and dresses. Below is Editor-in-Chief Liz Roberts holding a Red Hue bag by their table.
