In a time where most modern-day love stories seem to start on Hinge or Bumble, meet-cutes can feel like a lost art. It seems like nowadays, everyone has a similar story of how they met their partner, and the only places you can hear about meet-cutes are in the pages of romance novels or on screen in your favorite TV series or movies. But what if I told you that romance isn’t dead? Would you believe me if I said that even in an era where digital dating is the norm, there are still meet-cute stories to be told?

Meeting people and making connections is difficult, but being queer can make it a bit harder. As a queer person, I myself have experienced the challenges that come with queer dating, but just because it’s hard to find someone doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

Though it might seem rare, meet-cutes definitely still exist, even among queer daters. (I would know — I had one!) If you’re anything like me, then you love a good real-life love story. So, from being each other’s competition to having a crush on your barista, here are four queer Gen Zers’ meet-cute stories that are sure to make you swoon.

Luz, 19: “She was a customer at the coffee shop I worked at.”

“Grace always came to study at the cafe I work at. After a while, it became incredibly obvious that she was crushing on me and was too shy to make the first move. I noticed that she would look at me as I was working and blush when I smiled at her. I was also crushing on her, which is why I found her on Instagram through a mutual acquaintance. We started to DM when she followed me back, and we never stopped talking after that. A few days later, we met up for coffee and have been together ever since.”

Juliet*, 21: “She was my rival in powerlifting.”

“Even though we aren’t together anymore, I still think the way we met is super sweet, and I still have so much love for her. We were rivals in powerlifting, as she went to another university across the country that was known for powerlifting. At first, I followed her account to see my competition, but then we started talking. We met up at our competition and learned we were direct competitors. I told her we’d date if she beat me — and she did. We were together for over a year.”

Reagan, 22: “She lived across the hall from me.”

“My girlfriend, Sierra, and I met freshman year of college. She lived across the hall from me, and we would frequently walk past one another, locking eyes every time. We shortly began flirting and started dating in October, only two months after meeting. We spent every second together, and she eventually became my roommate after my original roommate dropped out. We’ve now been together for three years in October!”

Sage, 18: “I noticed her at our choir show.”

“We were at a dress rehearsal for our choir’s pop show, and I remember our friends were singing a Justin Bieber song on stage. I was a freshman, so I was so nervous about being anything but ‘normal.’ But there in the dark of the auditorium, I could see her smile and dance, and it made me want to join her.”
