Lose the Freshman 15: Pump it Up!

Hey collegiettes!  Unfortunately, this week I do not have any weight loss to report, but the good news is that I do not have any weight gain to report either!  I am not discouraged from losing zero pounds because I know I am making healthy choices that will pay off in the future.  I also can feel myself becoming fitter and getting into better shape.  The scale does not always show all the changes!

After a long day, working out can be the last thing that’s on your mind.  Sometimes all you need for that extra oomph is a solid playlist!  I know that a upbeat list of tunes definitely can keep me motivated and makes the time pass faster when I exericse.  Here are some of my favorite playlists (Beware of my taste in music!):

WARM-UP and COOLDOWN: Keep the songs slow but not too slow ~115 bpm

  1. Kryptonite – 3 Doors Down
  2. Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
  3. In Too Deep – Sum 41
  4. I’m Just a Kid – Simple Plan
  5. Midnight Life – White Panda

CARDIO: Most songs should be around 125-140 bpm and 145-160+ for faster runs

  1. Hurts like Heaven – Coldplay
  2. I’m Only Me When I’m With You – Taylor Swift
  3. Waka Waka – Shakira
  4. Sk8er Boi – Avril Lavigne
  5. Scream & Shout – will.i.am and Britney Spears
  6. My Life Would Suck Without You – Kelly Clarkson
  7. I Love It – Icona Pop (feat. Charli XCX)
  8. U + Ur Hand – P!nk
  9. Girlfriend – Avril Lavigne (FAST)
  10. Ocean Avenue – Yellowcard (FAST)
  11. Titanium – David Guetta (feat. Sia)
  12. Raise Your Glass – P!nk
  13. Halo/Walking on Sunshine – Glee Cast
  14. I Knew You Were Trouble – Taylor Swift
  15. Levels – Avicii

STRENGTH: Mostly songs with a strong, steady beat

  1. Somebody Told Me – The Killers
  2. Stronger – Kanye West
  3. Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
  4. All-Star – Smash Mouth
  5. Lose Yourself – Eminem
  6. No Interruption – Hoodie Allen
  7. Numb/Encore – Linkin Park & Jay Z

These songs are just a few of MANY!  I love to change up what I listen to, and feel free to share any of your favorites workout playlists!  Remember that workouts are most effective when they are paired with healthy eating, so be sure to check out the SELF Drop 10 diet for great healthy meal options.

Enjoy the rest of your week!!!  Tomorrow, the New York Times crossword puzzle editor, Will Shortz, is coming to speak at Amherst, so that should be interesting to listen to!

P.S. Check out these colorful cupcakes they were giving out on the quad today– so tempting, but I’m so happy I didn’t eat one!
