HC Writers’ Favorite Items In Their Wardrobes

Take a step into HCers’ closets and take a peek at a few of our staff writers’ favorite items in their wardrobes!

Spiked Necklace

Owner: Kelsey Mulvey, HC’s How She Got There Editor and junior at Boston University

“I’m seriously obsessed with this spiked necklace. I got it at this small boutique and it’s been love ever since—the perfect blend between edgy and quirky! I love to take fashion risks of all sorts, but I tend to buy things with a lot of spikes. Unlike my lovely pair of Jeffrey Campbell spiked loafers (because those are obviously a necessity), I think this necklace represents my style and personality the best: funky but not too in-your-face.”

Poncho Cardigan Sweater

Owner: Ashley Young, Campus Correspondent and junior at West Virginia Wesleyan College

“This sweater is my favorite new item because it’s simple, yet classic. I can throw it on and have that chic ‘it looks like I tried’ look, even though I threw the outfit together in minutes. To top it all, the neutral color pairs with anything!”

Little Black Dress

Owner: Hannah Orenstein, HC’s High School Editor and sophomore at New York University

“It’s clichéd but true—my little black dress is one of my favorite pieces I own because it’s so versatile! In this photo, I wore it with lace tights and black pumps for a formal class presentation, but I’ve also changed up my accessories to wear it for date night, a job interview, holidays, and more.”

J.Crew Schoolboy Velvet Blazer in Poppy

Owner: Phyu-Sin Than, Chapter Contributing Writer and sophomore at Mount Holyoke College

“Without a doubt, this picture contains all my MUST-HAVE items in my closet.  The blazer is a Schoolboy Velvet Blazer from J.Crew in Poppy. I know coral/orange is last year’s color but people still love it and I just can’t get over how well it pops on any outfit! I can layer it with anything ivory or soft pastel colors underneath and a pair of jeans and I’m all good-to-go effortlessly. It also keeps me super warm without a bulky jacket.”

H&M Cheetah Print Button-Down Blouse

Owner: Alicia Thomas, Career Editor and sophomore at Pennsylvania State University

“My favorite item in my wardrobe is this cheetah print button-down blouse from H&M. I love that the colors are neutral so it can go with just about anything, but the pattern’s fun enough that it keeps from being boring. I pair this with black jeggings and boots or with a bright skirt and heels, and I love the way it looks every time!”

White Sweater Coat

Owner: Roxanna Coldiron, Contributing Writer and senior at Hiram College

“I love my sweater coat. I got it used when I was in high school and I’ve kept it through college because it’s so comfortable and warm. Some people even think it’s cute!”

Urban Outfitters Black and White Aztec Sweater

Owner: Laura Maddox, Campus Correspondent and senior at Appalachian State University

“My favorite piece is this black and white Aztec sweater from Urban Outfitters! It is so versatile and matches practically anything! It’s super easy to dress up or dress down and, an added bonus—it’s really comfortable! Photo credit goes to Haley Rogers.”

American Eagle White Trimmed Black Blazer

Owner: Elyssa Sternberg, Campus Correspondent and sophomore at Boston University

“My American Eagle Blazer is my favorite because I considered not getting it at first but I went with my gut and bought it. It’s a staple in my wardrobe because I feel so put-together when I’m in it!”

Silver Chain Belt

Owner: Kate Moriarty, Contributing Writer and junior at Skidmore College

“I found this silver belt in a little shop in Santa Fe, NM over winter break. I love it because it was the most unique souvenir that I brought home with me and will always remind me of the trip. The design is eye-catching and different and can turn even the most boring, all-black outfit into a head-turner. Not only that, it also just happened to fit me perfectly! Kismet.”

Jean shirt with J.Crew Color Statement Necklace

Owner: Meg Malhame, Campus Correspondent and sophomore at Georgetown University

“My favorite piece in my closet is probably a tie between the jean shirt and necklace I have on in the photo. Working at J.Crew has its perks (like being able to buy some amazing clothes and accessories), but my paycheck definitely pays for it! I can throw on the jean shirt with a pair of leggings, under a sweater or even with a pair of jeans. It works with everything, but I may need to cut back on wearing it… All I have to say is that I’m obsessed with the necklace!”

Turquoise Bow Embellished Dress

Owner: Annie Robinson, HC High School Ambassador

“I can’t live without my turquoise bow embellished dress. It was a vintage re-vamp I designed and sewed myself (it used to be a crazy dress from the ‘50s that looked completely different!) I love it because it is whimsical and feminine. I have so much fun wearing this piece to parties in the summertime because it is unique and totally me.”

Silver Cross Necklace

Owner: Stacey Oswald, Campus Correspondent and sophomore at Vanderbilt University

“The only thing I have that I can’t live without is my cross necklace. It’s really small and dainty and it goes with absolutely everything—I don’t think I’ve taken it off in a year!”

Michael Kors Brown Loafers

Owner: Katey Psencik, Contributing Writer and senior at the University of Texas at Austin

“My Michael Kors loafers are my favorite part of my wardrobe because they’re so flexible when it comes to where I can wear them! I can either wear them with skinny jeans and a blouse for work, or pair them with shorts and a t-shirt for hanging out with friends in this beautiful Texas winter we’re having—it’s 80 degrees! Not only can I wear them anywhere with anything but the soft leather makes them super comfortable.”

Forever 21 Union Jack Cropped Sweater

Owner: Sarah Casimong, Contributing Writer and senior at Kwantlen Polytechnic University

“This is my favorite item in my wardrobe at the moment: my Union Jack cropped sweater from Forever 21. I love it because it is cute and comfortable and anything with a Union Jack looks fashionable… This might be biased because I am an anglophile.”

Homemade Giraffe Sweatshirt

Owner: Sammie Levin, Health Editor and sophomore at the University of Michigan

“I love this sweatshirt because not only is it so comfy, and not only does it have a giraffe wearing a Hawaiian t-shirt coming out of the pocket, but also I got it in London when I went euro-tripping with my three friends so it brings back great memories every time I wear it. I got it in a shop that sold handmade shirts and sweatshirts, all with different animals on them. I wish I bought more!”

Rag & Bone / JEAN leggings in Rust + Coach “Monday” Riding Boots

Owner: Erin Appenzoller, Campus Correspondent and junior at Emerson College

“My absolutely favorite items in my wardrobe are my Rag & Bone / JEAN leggings in rust and Coach ‘Monday’ riding boots. The Rag & Bone leggings are super comfortable, flattering, and don’t bunch at the knee after a few hours of wearing them (my pet peeve). I have been wearing them all fall and winter long with leopard loafers, flats, riding boots, booties, and rain boots. My Coach boots go with everything! I love that I can slip them on and run out the door. They add polish to every look! This Chicwish sweater from UsTrendy is also quickly becoming a favorite of mine. It’s warm and comfortable!”

Khaki Elie Tahari Trench Coat

Owner: Meghan DeMaria, Contributing Writer and senior at UNC-Chapel Hill

“My favorite pieces in my wardrobe are my three trench coats! I especially love my khaki Elie Tahari one—it is so versatile and can dress up jeans and flats or finish off a business look when I’m interning.
