Why You Should Buy a Silk Pillowcase

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Youngstown chapter.

Over winter break, I saw several commercials promoting silk pillowcases through various online vendors.  Once I received my final paycheck from the month of December, I decided to splurge on a Pure Silk Pillowcase in rose gold.  This product is 100% silk with an invisible zipper.  Upon arrival, I immediately busted the pillowcase out of its packaging, threw it in the washer (as it is machine washable), and placed it on my pillow.

Slip’s pillowcases claim to provide three primary benefits: anti-aging, anti-sleep crease, and anti-bed head.  After sleeping on a silk pillowcase for a week, I have started to witness these benefits firsthand.  Let’s break down each claim one by one.

  1. Anti-Aging: According to the New York Post, we spend approximately half of our lives in bed.  Between sleeping or simply reading and relaxing, the average American spends 10-11 hours in their bed every single day.  That is a lot of time to be resting upon a pillowcase.  Because silk fibers are significantly less absorbent than other fibers, silk can help keep our skin’s moisture (as well as our face and hair products) where they belong.  This means we’ll actually reap the benefits of our shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, face masks, and face creams.  Silk also reduces stretching and tugging on our delicate facial skin.  I cannot say whether or not I’ve reversed or reduced my skin’s aging; however, I can share that my face appears more radiant and rejuvenated upon waking up.
  2. Anti-Sleep Crease: Have you ever woken up with a sleep crease after a short night or long nap?  I definitely have.  They’re not the worst, but they take several minutes to go away.  While sleep creases certainly minimize over time, our skin loses its elasticity with age, meaning that these creases or wrinkles may take longer to disappear.  Through reducing friction, Slip’s pillowcases allow skin to glide upon the fabric and avoid these pesky sleep creases.  Over the past week, I have yet to wake up with any lines on my face.
  3. Anti-Bed Head: Typical pillowcases can cause hair to move, pull, and tangle throughout the night.  Since Slip’s products reduce friction, we are less likely to move our heads as much, lowering the chances of messing up our hair.  Prior to sleeping on a silk pillowcase, my bed head was unbelievable; just ask my roommates.  Most days, I’d end up throwing my untamable mane into a messy bun to save time and avoid the frustration of brushing it all out.  I’m also a night showerer, which usually meant that I’d wake up with half-air-dried hair that still needed blown upon waking up.  Not only is my hair now completely dry by the morning, but it’s also far more tame and manageable.  This has shaved off several minutes from my morning routine, allowing me to spend a few extra moments in bed.

The benefits of sleeping on a silk pillowcase extend far beyond these three concepts.  In general, resting upon silk feels incredibly comfortable.  Silk is also a natural heat regulator.  By keeping our faces cool, we may fall asleep faster.  Additionally, this fabric is hypoallergenic thanks to its natural protein structure, so those of us with sensitive skin no longer need to worry about developing as many irritations or allergies as we may have from a traditional cotton pillowcase.  Overall, I cannot recommend this product enough.  If you needed an excuse to treat yourself, consider this your sign.
