This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at York U chapter.

Kaitlin is a fellow writer at Her Campus YorkU, and ever since I joined Her Campus, she, along with the rest of the team, welcomed me with open arms. With writing and reading being her passion, Kaitlin is majoring in Professional Writing at York University. Originally from Thunder Bay, Kaitlin is family-oriented and loves to spend time with her friends. I asked her a few questions so you can get to know her better.

What made you want to become a writer?

I’ve always loved reading and writing, and they’ve always made my life better and easier. Others’ words impacted me, and once I figured that out, I realized that I could affect others too. I haven’t always had the opportunity to have a voice and writing grants me that. Writing lets people be heard and I fell in love with that. I write to speak, but also for others to listen and hopefully gain something.

What is the one skill you’d like to learn and why?

I’d love to learn more languages! My aunt, uncle, and niece live in Switzerland and I want to be able to visit with ease, and Spanish seems really fun. I also want to learn how to drive. I got hit by a semi a few years back and was too scared to get my G2, but I think this is my year!

What is your best childhood memory?

I spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ camp (or cottage, for you southerners), so it would definitely be there. It would probably be the time we squeezed my entire extended family in for a family reunion (think 13 people with only 4 beds). It was one of the last times I saw my great-grandmothers, and I got to see my aunt, who I’m very very close to.

If you could only keep 5 possessions, what would they be?

My hope chest, my collection of birthday cards that I’ve had for 10+ years, my phone (what can I say… I’m a millennial!), my tarot cards/crystals, and a fully functional mini cabin my great grandfather carved for me when I was little.

Who do you most admire in life?

My mom. She’s my original “ride or die.” The amount of respect I have for her is unreal. She has done so much for me. I could never imagine going through school with a busy toddler, and she did, and did so amazingly!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Dublin, Ireland. I’m half Irish and I want to see more of my heritage and learn more about the culture so I can add it to my life.

How would your friends describe you?

Eccentric, persistent and loyal. They’d also ideally call me a writer!

What would you like to accomplish once your finished university?

I think that me finishing university will be a huge accomplishment by itself, as my disabilities have really made my school career difficult. I’m not 100% sure where I will be going after that and where my writing will take me, but I have faith that it will be great. Beyond that, I want the impossible dream of owning a nice little house in the country, where I can settle down and enjoy life.
