The Golden Globes is an annual ceremony that recognizes excellence in film and television. It is a major part of the awards seasons in the entertainment industry. Most of the time, the major winners of the Golden Globes end up winning other prestigious awards such as the Academy Awards. This year, the Golden Globes were highly publicized due to the multiple sexual harassment allegations that came against many (gross) men in Hollywood, meaning that everyone was looking to see what the other members of the Hollywood elite would do. Although, there was a heavy undertone to the awards ceremony, there were still some respectable and funny moments.

Oprah’s Speech

Oprah Winfrey received the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement at the Golden Globes this year. She delivered such an inspirational speech that I believe everyone should hear. Oprah is an amazing woman and to be where she is today after all she’s gone through is proof that hard work and fighting back pay off.

Seth Meyers Putting Abusers on Blast

During Meyer’s opening monologue he addressed some of the sexual abusers, most notably his digs at Kevin Spacey. Seth really did not hold back and he even did a special edition of his ‘Jokes Seth Can’t Tell’ segment from his talk show.

This year a lot of female-based TV series and films won awards such as; Lady Bird winning best film (comedy/musical), Handmaid’s Tale winning best TV series (drama), Big Little Lies winning best mini-series/TV movie, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri (best screenplay & best film) and The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel (best comedy TV series).

Natalie Portman’s Best Director Dig

This year the nominees for the Best Director for a motion picture category consisted of all male directors. Naturally, many individuals found this insulting especially due to the current state of Hollywood. Natalie Portman, who was co-presenting the award, decided to add in a little dig by saying “Here are the all-male nominees.”

Sterling K. Brown’s Historical Win

Sterling K. Brown, one of the stars of the hit TV show This Is Us, made history at this year’s Golden Globes by being the first-ever black actor to win the ‘best actor in a TV drama’ category. In a touching speech, he made sure to thank his show’s creator for seeing him for who he is and creating such a real and respectful role.

Overall, this year’s Golden Globes was definitely an interesting start to the upcoming awards season. Hopefully, we will see more influential people speak up about current issues and try to make a difference.
