Animal Farm (1945)

Author: George Orwell

If you are just looking for something quick to read that also will make you think differently about the world this book is for you! The animals rebel and win against the humans for their freedom, however, it does not turn out the way some of them had hoped. This remarkable representation of the Russian Revolution of 1917, still has many relevant themes today.

 

Little Women (1869)

Author: Louisa May Alcott

This is a novel about four sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, as they grow and discover where they want to be in the world. Each with their own unique vision for where they want their lives to go, as they jump through hurdles to get there. This eloquently written novel is both thought-provoking and entertaining.

The Colour Purple (1982)

Author: Alice Walker

This is one you will have a hard time putting down. The Colour Purple follows Celie as she documents her difficult life in her journal. This book demonstrates what real love between friends and family looks like and what true redemption feels like.

Jane Eyre (1847)

Author: Charlotte Bronte

Jane Eyre is an orphan who sticks to her studies and later becomes a teacher for a little girl in a house called Thornfield. Jane quickly falls in love with the man of the house, Mr. Rochester, who is soon to wed another woman. Drama ensues, leaving Jane to have to make a choice that could change her life forever.

The Lord of the Flies (1954)

Author: William Golding

The story begins with a plane crash filled with young boys who were being evacuated due to the war. They quickly realize that they can make up their own rules without any adults around and the mood on the island changes. Will they be able to trust each other and work together so that they can be rescued?
