Book Talk: #GIRLBOSS

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

Title: #GIRLBOSS

Author: Sophia Amoruso

Date Published: May 6th, 2014

Genre: Non-Fiction, Autobiography/Memoir

Sophia Amoruso seems to have it made: never having went to college, she turned a spur-of-the-moment decision (a tiny eBay shop selling vintage clothing she bought from garage sales) to a multi-million dollar company called Nasty Gal and seemed to have a heck of a good time doing it. How did she make it happen? Lots of hard work, dedication, and utilizing all her sass to get what she wanted.

Between Amoruso’s tumultuous past (just wait till you get to the shoplifting section), her free spirit, and her love of fashion, there is something here for everyone. Even if you aren’t a usual non-fiction reader, she gives a lot of practical advice for women trying to be successful in this world while staying true to her dreams and values (she lovingly dubs this type of woman a #GIRLBOSS).

Amoruso wrote #GIRLBOSS in a humorous and cheeky way. To us, her writing feels like that super cool upperclassmen that takes you under their wing. Sophia is blunt, she’s real, and she doesn’t care about what you think of her. This isn’t a self-help book or a how to make it in the fashion world map; it’s just her story and what habits she found led to that success.

After reading it, you feel that burst of inspiration to go chase your dreams and to not let anyone get in the way of stopping you. It’s refreshing to hear someone make their own path when the conventional ways to success aren’t cutting it for them. An overall short read, #GIRLBOSS is worth picking up for that boost through the end of semester where you just want to skate by instead of trying your hardest.

“Abandon anything about your life and habits that might be holding you back. Learn to create your own opportunities. Know that there is no finish line; fortune favors action. Race balls-out toward the extraordinary life that you’ve always dreamed of, or still haven’t had time to dream up. And prepare to have a hell of a lot of fun along the way.”
