Now that school has been in session for a couple weeks now, it is inevitable that your inbox piles up with emails that all need responses, your homework seems never-ending, and you don’t even have time to sleep much less to take care of yourself.

Self-care, not Pumpkin Spice Lattes, is probably one of the most important things on your to-do list in order to stay sane. Whether that’s taking time to read a bit of a book every day, catching the latest episode of the ridiculously fun Scream Queens, or hanging out with friends – make it a priority.

Xavier’s PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) has paired with O’Connor Sports Center for this year’s Week of Wellness to put on Yoga on the Yard, a free yoga class taught by a trained professional from the student gym! It’s BYOM – bring your own mat – so don’t forget your yoga supplies in the dorm room.

Yoga on the Yard is this Sunday, October 4th 2015 from 2-4pm. Even if this is your first time practicing, stop by for some treats from Community Blend, a giveaway, and prize pack! This event is all about letting go of some stress and tension while indulging in some self-care.

In honor of the event, we’ve researched some very real benefits of yoga – as if you needed any more excuses to get your stretch on!

1. According to the American Osteopathic Association, yoga can lower your blood pressure (which can rise during stressful times!) and reduce insomnia (like when you lie awake in bed and wish you were asleep already).

2. Duke University Medical Center tells us that since yoga and mindfulness practice produces the “happiness hormone” serotonin, people with depression or psychiatric problems could see real changes with long-term practice.

3. Hunched over your phone or your laptop all day? Yoga helps realign the spine and helps you practice better posture, while stretching out the muscles in your back – proven by multiple studies.

Have we convinced you to add yoga into your daily routine? Every Friday, O’Connor hosts a Wellness Yoga class to continue on the tradition. Get some relaxing meditation in before the weekend! If yoga isn’t your thing, still give yourself some R&R time and head down to O’Connor because every fitness class is free for students. Take advantage of that while you can, collegiettes, and treat yourself!
