Homesickness happens to everyone. It’s just a natural part of college. No matter if you live somewhere in Cincinnati or 500 miles away in a little town in Northern New Jersey, or farther, you’re bound to miss home at some point.
Here are 10 things to do when you get those homesick feelings:
1. Call your mom
She always wants to hear from you, so why not call her.
2. Text all your friends from back home
Chances are they may be homesick too, and talking with them is a great way to reconnect and not feel as homesick anymore.
3. Make a photo board
This may sound cheesy, but looking at my photo board of friends and family from back home actually helps me a lot when I start to miss them.
4. Make your favorite food from home
It’s clearly not the same as the way mom makes it, but at the very least it’ll make you feel better and all the more excited when you’ll be able to get the real deal when you go back home.
5. Talk to your RA
Their job is to help you feel better; don’t worry, they won’t be mad.
6. Join a club
The more that school feels like community and the more people you have in your life the more that Xavier feels like home
7. Work on some homework
Sure, it’s not the most fun thing you could be doing, but at least it’ll get your mind off of it.
8. Hang out with friends
Get your social interaction fix.
9. Read a Her Campus article
This is shameless promotion, and I’m not sorry about it.
10. Remember that you’re going home soon
But remember just because you’re going home soon doesn’t mean you should only think about home. Go out, get involved, and make friends, it’ll make the time go quicker and soon you’ll have a new dilemma: when you’re home you’ll miss college as much as you miss home when you’re at college.
