It’s back to school time and there is one thing on the mind of every college student: money.

But don’t panic! Just because those textbooks may have put a dent in your wallet doesn’t mean your style has to suffer! There are many ways to be stylish without breaking the bank. With these tips, you will have unique and flattering clothes and an up-to-date wardrobe—and be ready to take on the semester!

Step 1: Clean Out Your Wardrobe

You have to start with what you already have and go from there. Take stock of what you own and get rid of anything that doesn’t fit you or clothes that you just don’t wear (we all have them). While it may be hard to say goodbye, remember that you are making room for all the new clothes. It’s also a great way to be charitable! Let your friends look and have first dibs, then donate any leftovers to a local charity. Way to be generous and gorgeous!

Step 2: Find The Discount Stores

Find out where the nearest Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Cato, Ross, etc. are located and go shopping! Other possibilities include thrift stores, Salvation Army’s, consignment shops and second-hand stores. For those of us here in Buckhannon, visit the local boutiques on Main Street. With their regularly updated stock, low prices and student discounts, you’re bound to get a great deal!

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Be careful about return policies. Sometimes, because the clothes are discounted, they can only be returned for store credit or are non-refundable. Be sure to try things on so you can be confident in your purchases.
  • Look for fabrics, cuts and name brands. Because discount stores have such a wide range of clothing, some have better quality than others. Better quality fabrics tend to have better cuts and are therefore more flattering. Again, the only way you will know is to TRY THINGS ON!

Step 3: Sale Racks

Sale racks will soon become your best friend! This way, you can visit your usual favorite stores and still save big!

Before you go crazy, be sure to keep these things in mind:

  • Again, be wary of the return policy for sale items; they’re usually different.
  • Look for the signs: there is a big difference between 10 and 50 percent off.

Step 4: Try Something New

Don’t be afraid to use your thrifty shopping time to experiment with something new. If you see an item that fits well and is priced right, try it out! You might be surprised at how your style could evolve from just one great purchase!

Step 5: Have Patience

It can be slow process finding the stores that have the best deals for you. But don’t get discouraged! Saving money on incredible and useful clothes is one of the most satisfying experiences! Don’t get down on yourself if you splurge on an item that you can’t live without. (It happens to the best of us.) The key is to be observant and to keep an eye on your personal budget. Be sure to put those college research skills to good use and find out when your favorite stores are having big sales.

Step 6: Have Fun

Remember that fashion is a trial and error process. If you don’t find anything on a shopping trip, don’t stress out. Try again and find the love for discount shopping. So, take a break from the books, grab a friend, and enjoy “popping tags.” Most importantly, enjoy your full closet and your full wallet.

Stay classy, ladies!

I am adopted from Russia and was raised in West Virginia. I am a double major in English (Writing Concentration) and Musical Theatre. I love art in many different forms be it writing, singing, acting, drawing/painting, or design. I adore fashion and it has helped me become the person that I want to be in life. I am a very open person and love talking to people, so feel free to ask me anything! I am honored to be a part of the Her Campus team and I hope that my writing will bring you a smile. If I'm not in the theater or typing up my version of the great American fashion column, you can always hear me coming from the click of my heels. My advice to all: Stay classy!
