Five Movies You Need to Watch At Least Once In Your Lifetime

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.
  1. Grease (1978)

I don’t think I’ve heard bad words towards Grease until I came to college. I was like, “Seriously, how can you not like it a least a little tiny bit!?”

Grease is a Musical based in the fifties, about a “Greaser” (haha, get it?) named Danny Zuko (played by John Travolta) and a good girl named Sandy (Olivia Newton John) who had a summer romance before Sandy had to leave for Australia. Turns out, summer wasn’t the last time they would see eachother, because somehow, Sandy is enrolled at his school. With fear of spoilers, I won’t elaborate much more, but it is a love story. Both the music and the acting are phenomenal! If I have guessed correctly, anybody who is reading this has seen the movie. Although it amazes me that someone could not enjoy Grease, I think it is more important that it is at least seen once because it is a classic, and you’ll have a blast!

  1. Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Talk about a masterpiece, and a musical that’s out of this world (literally, hehe). The Rocky Horror Picture Show stars Tim Curry amongst other well-known actors and actresses. The music is iconic, and the story line is pretty groovy! After their engagement, Janet and Brad get lost on their way to visit their old professor, Professor Scott, whose class they had taken together. It can be a little confusing and even weird for some, but trust me, you’ll watch it and want to do the Time Warp, again!

  1. The Goonies (1985)

These guys are amazing! Hailing from the “Goon” docks, these characters are much more diversified. There’s Mikey, Brand, Chunk, Mouth, Data, Andy, Stef, Sloth, and the Fratellis! Mikey is a little boy with asthma who wants to find the treasure of One-eyed Willy, a long dead pirate, and his friends come along. The Fratellis are criminals who escaped from jail. The Goonies fight off perils and booby traps to get to the treasure and evade their pursuers. But trust me, there is so much more that you can only get from on screen!

  1. Beetlejuice (1988)

Beetlejuice? Beetlejuice! Beetleju-

Don’t say his name three times, or you’ll be sorry you summoned the Ghost with the most! Michael Keaton and Tim Burton partner up in this beautifully imaginative film. The Maitlands love their home, a big house in the middle of a small town, but when a unforeseen accident occurs, they find out they are diseased…no, deceased! After their deaths, the house is sold to a new family, the Deetz’s, including their gothic daughter, Lydia. It’s a wild adventure, and a film to die for!

  1. Labyrinth (1986)

The Labyrinth is amazing, and hands down, most likely my favorite movie. It stars David Bowie as the Goblin King, and Jennifer Connelly as Sarah who accidently wishes her brother away to the goblins. After much pleading, the Goblin King gives her the chance to get baby Toby back, only if she can figure out his Labyrinth.

“Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City to take back the child that you have stolen.”

It has all these magical characters, Hoggle the Dwarf and Ludo the monster, Sarah makes many friends along the way as she battles to grow up and take on any semblance of adulthood. It is really a worthwhile movie; a must.
