As the leaves change and classes pick up, Autumn can definitely become overwhelming quickly. Add quarantine and online classes to the mix and it can be difficult not to feel stuck in a rut. Here are my best tips on how to combat your “school slump” and keep from getting overwhelmed!

Stay organized

With online classes and heavier workloads, staying on top of your course load might seem impossible this semester. Without an organizational system in place it’s easy to forget about assignments and readings as they come up. A simple way to make sure nothing falls through the cracks is to invest in a good planner. Some of the best ones I’ve found have been from Target, but Papier and DaySpring are amazing if you’re willing to spend a little more. Along with a planner, I use sticky notes for quick reminders just in case it slips from my mind. Also, Notion is a lifesaver when you want to take the time to compile all of your readings and notes. You can even upload your class schedule!

Create a routine

Another simple way to tackle your classes without being overwhelmed is to create and stick to a routine! Planning ahead and scheduling time into your day to finish assignments, do readings and review your notes is an easy way to stay on top of your classes. Make sure that you’re also scheduling in time for yourself and taking breaks!

Fuel your body!

This semester looks different for everyone right now. Maybe you don’t have to hike across campus for class, or you aren’t able to hit the gym frequently. These are not excuses to skip meals or snacks! There’s no way for you to be physically and mentally present in your classes and club meetings if you are not fulfilling your daily nutritional intake. When reviewing your schedule, pay attention to gaps in the middle of the day and make an effort to eat three full meals and a snack or two.

Find your study vibe

Staring at a computer screen all day is exhausting and might seem monotonous. With so many distractions while being home or in your apartment, it’s very easy to pull focus away from your work. This is why it’s important to recognize what helps you focus and ways in which you can incorporate it into your study routine. It can be as simple as creating a playlist or even lighting a candle. Making yourself comfortable is essential to minimize distractions and be able to succeed in class!

Fall looks different for all of us this year. Being stuck inside and completing everything remotely can be a difficult adjustment, especially if you’ve never done it before. Your previous study methods might not work in a new environment and flexibility is going to be key this semester. Staying organized and on top of your course load might seem daunting, but it is completely achievable!
