5 Tips for Staying Active in the Cold Weather

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

As the temperature drops in the next few weeks, finding motivation to stay active can be extremely hard. Even just leaving the warmth of your blankets on dark mornings becomes a great feat. However, staying active is really important to keeping our minds and bodies healthy! So, here are some ways to stay motivated during these cold months:

1. Embrace the cold!

Don’t let the low temperatures stop you from getting the fresh air and workout you want. Bundle up, and hit the running trails in a thick pair of leggings, a cozy fleece, a hat and a pair of gloves. You won’t even notice the cold once you’re halfway through.

2. Get yourself some new gear

Treating yourself to some nice workout gear will likely pay off in the long run: if you feel good about what you’re wearing, you might feel more motivated to go out and take charge of your day. Here are some cute options we love:

Onzie Track Legging — Urban Outfitters, $69

CMMTD Racer Back Bra — Adidas, $30

Seamless Patience & Strength Crop Top (pictured) — Free People – $58

3. Find a workout buddy

Keeping active can get be pretty difficult on your own, so get a friend to hold you accountable and keep you motivated. Not to mention, it’s great to have someone to laugh and talk with while working out — you’re all in it together!

4. Carry your gym bag and make time during the day

Not an early riser? Too exhausted to exercise after a long day of classes? Try dedicating a small break in your day to working out. Pack a gym bag and a lunch the night before so you’re ready to grab and go in the morning. Go for a run during lunch or stop at the gym for a half hour to do the elliptical; you’ll sweat out your worries for the day and feel refreshed before heading to class.

5. Try a new workout!

Instead of pushing yourself to spend an hour at the gym doing the same routine, try a fun class or test out a new circuit at home. It’s amazing what you can find on YouTube and Pinterest — they can be just as satisfying as doing the machines. We love these ideas:

Even if it’s just 20 minutes of your day, staying active and keeping your body moving is really important — they’ll do wonders for your mind, body and spirit. Go ahead, stay motivated and healthy with these tips!
