5 Things To Make Your Life More Eco-Friendly While Being Friendly To Your Wallet!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

We all care about the environment and every time we see those horrible videos of animals being harmed by the waste that we all produce it hurts.

These products will make your life less harmful to the environment without it hurting our college budget too much!

1. Stainless Steel Straws

As a college student, we use straws A LOT so instead of always picking up plastic straw after plastic straw when we visit Starbucks or the food court these straws can be used, carried around, washed and reused! This can help you reduce the amount of waste you produce when using straws. Stainless Steel Straws can be found on Amazon, Target or Walmart, for pretty cheap and in different lengths. You can choose the best one for you! If you can’t splurge on the stainless steel straws and have tumblers that have come with hard plastic ones they work well too!

2. Stainless Steel Water Bottle

To go with your new Stainless steel straws, you can get a stainless steel water bottle! We all get thirsty during the day and we all need to drink more water, so having a water bottle solves both those things. It also cuts down on the amount of paper or plastic cups and plastic water bottles that end up in the trash at the end of the day.

3. Bee’s Wrap

Bee’s Wrap is an alternative to plastic wrap, plastic sandwich bags, and aluminum foil. It is made from beeswax and can be used as reusable packaging for food (they even have baggies!). You can use it for wrapping sandwiches or fruits and is sealed by the warmth of your hands. Bee’s Wrap can be hand washed/wiped down after each use. Bee’s Wrap has their own website (embed link here)  or can be found on Amazon. The large packs can be expensive but a pack of three with different sizes is affordable, especially when you no longer have to pay for plastic wrap anymore!

4. Reusable Grocery Bags

Reusable grocery bags are an easy way to cut down on your plastic waste. We all go to the grocery store and each time we do we use at least one plastic bag, if not many more. Reusable bags are available almost anywhere and they come in a variety of sizes, colors, and styles (included ones for your refrigerated items!). Making the switch is easy as long as you remember to take the bags with you when you go shopping. You can pick up a few bags next time you go shopping or order a pack of them from places like Amazon, Walmart or Target.

5. Reusable “Paper” Towels

These reusable “paper” towels are made of rayon and can be used for anything that a regular paper towel is used for but they can be washed and reused! They come on a roll and are hand washable. In being a college student, we use paper towels for a variety of things like spills on the floor of our dorm room or as a substitute for paper plates when we run out of them. These reusable paper towels can cut down on the waste we all create from the number of regular paper towels we use, especially when those uses don’t always require a paper towel.

So Collegiettes, help the Earth by making small changes to our daily routines, we just have to commit to them!
