National Boyfriend Day: Three Things I Wish I Could Tell my Former Single Self

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

National Boyfriend Day is a day I truly thought I would never celebrate. Although, I do think it’s a made-up holiday not to be taken too seriously, as we should be celebrating our significant others every day. Before I had a boyfriend, I would definitely long for the day I would have someone to celebrate. This is a list of things I wish I could tell my former single self.

1. God’s timing is EVERYTHING. Believe that!

Oh boy, if I had only known the truth behind this statement! Literally… it wasn’t until I genuinely believed that I needed only God to satisfy me that my current boyfriend walked into my life. I was never one to complain about not having a boyfriend, but there would be times that I would get discouraged or jealous of cute couples around me. If I had trusted God earlier, I wouldn’t have wasted so much time waiting!

2. Relationships are not all that cute as Instagram and Pinterest photos make them out to be.

Yes, my relationship is fun, and I am happy all of the time, but everything is not #Instagrammable! This is more directed to my younger self, but I remember spending way too much time fantasizing about all the romantic and outrageously cringey pictures I would take with my boyfriend. Relationships require a lot of work, trust and effort from both people. Not everything is for social media!

3. Your future relationship will be absolutely worth the 20 years of being single.

If someone would have told me this one years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it. I never expected to be so blessed with such a great guy! The years of middle and high school where everyone was dating around had me envious, but while my friends were getting hurt, I was dodging bullets! Waiting until I was absolutely ready to date paid off big time!

On this National Boyfriend Day, although you should do this every day, take time to appreciate the significant other you have in your life and the journey that brought you together. And if you’re single, embrace it because it may not last forever!
