Okay, okay, so you’ve just started your first year at WLU and you are stoked (or maybe you aren’t… you’ll get there). Not only did you most likely move away from your fam, but you probably have met a bunch of new friends, new roommates, maybe you live in a new city, and basically, you’re starting a brand new chapter in your life. Well, I’m here to give you the honest to goodness, straight facts you need to know about Laurier, the sooner the better.

1. Spotted at Laurier is your friend, but not your best friend.

Every student who’s been here for more than a year knows that Spotted gets taken over by first years every year. We know, we were there. But enough is enough. Instead of tweeting about the person who keeps sneezing at the library, go offer them a Kleenex and make a new friend. That adorable guy in the blue shirt and the jays hat (#basic) in BU111? Don’t send spotted a tweet saying you think he’s cute, the only person that cares about that tweet is you, go talk to him. Save your most hilarious pictures, tweets and whatnot for spotted when we can all appreciate it.

2. The lanyard is not essential.

The lanyard around your neck with your OneCard and res keys basically shouts “I’m new.” We were all there. We all still have those lanyards. Don’t be ashamed.  BUT, there are other ways to stash your keys and cards  which aren’t nearly as obvious.

3. Get your Laurier gear now, and later, and even later.

There is no such thing as too much Laurier gear. Hoodies, sweats, mugs, hats, mitts, scarves, flags… buy them all (although I don’t recommend wearing them all at once). Laurier gear makes great gifts and shows off your school pride in the best way.

4. Go to class. Seriously.

Let me be your mom for a quick second. Set an alarm (or 10). Wake up on time. Drag your butt to class. While it may be tempting to skip your 8:30 lecture, once you do it once it’s hard to turn back. Not only will your grades be better by just going to class, you’ll be getting the most for your money, and honestly, it’s not that hard.

Additionally, aim to make at least one new friend in every class. This way if you do have to miss the occasional class you have someone to lend you notes.

5. Celebrate with the Laurier fam.

Something that comes with amazing school spirit is amazing parties and celebrations. Yes Homecoming, I’m looking at you. Homecoming might be one of the best memories from first year so make it count. Many first years aren’t of legal age, but we know that doesn’t stop any drinking whatsoever. All I’m saying is pace yourself, eat some food, stay hydrated (water, Gatorade, juice, anything), take care of each other and know your limit. You’ll soon realize that mid-day naps on major holidays aren’t lame, but actually super common and life-saving. Have a blast, but don’t be the girl who’s passed out/sick/in the hospital before noon, (or anytime for that matter) it’s not worth it.

6. Get involved!

The start of the school year is the perfect time to join clubs, teams, societies, sports, etc. You’ll make some friends outside of your residence, outside of your program, outside of your year, and you’ll be a part of the something awesome.

7. Keep organized

Yup, another fun school tip! But seriously, school is stressful enough, so do yourself a favour and organize your life a little bit. The last thing you want is to have forgotten about a major essay and attempting to whip it together the night before it’s due. Not only will your essay suck, but you won’t be a happy camper either. Get a start on your work in advance and *try to finish things before the last minute.

8. Be yourself and make the most of your time here.

Remember, this might be a new chapter in your life, but it also could be the greatest chapter in your life.  Don’t sweat the small stuff and instead go have fun. Who cares if your roommate left a dish on the counter all weekend? Not you. There’s no way that in 4 years you’ll remember or care. Go make some good memories. Go make some good friends. Go make Laurier proud.

So baby Hawks, we now officially welcome you to the Laurier family. IT’S GREAT TO BE A LAURIER GOLDEN HAWK!

You will typically see me with a large cup of tea and browsing social media under the fairy lights and reading up on my favourite lady bosses (Mindy Kaling let me be you please). Also my trivia regarding superheroes is endless. I have more music than time to listen to and someone definitely should consider taking away my blogging privileges.

My love for pop culture is limitless and Netflix is the true MVP in my opinion.
