Dear Anxiety, I Just Don’t Have the Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Anxiety is one of those things that can show up WHENEVER it wants. It’s like a bad cold you just can’t shake, and it is definitely not something you were hoping for. Anxiety can come from so many different things, and be expressed in a variety of ways. Being away at school and experiencing new things is a big change for many people, and can spark many emotions and feelings, some that we might not be used to or know how to handle. Everyone experiences anxiety differently, but just remember, you are NOT alone. Here are a few things to remember, mid-anxiety attack.

BREATHE

First things first, take a deeeeeeep breath. When we’re caught up in something and are too busy freaking out, we can often forget the simplest things. Just breathe. Quite often, this can give you a huge sense of relief, and will help you take a calmer look at the situation.

Go for a Walk

Sometimes we just need to escape the situation or feelings we might be experiencing. Going on a walk or run will give you a chance to have a minute to yourself, and “walk off” some of things you may be feeling inside. This is a great method if you need a cool down and just need some time to think.

Take a Nap

Sometimes turning off what’s going on can allow us to see our situation in a different way when we turn it back on. Taking a nap can give you a break from your thoughts completely, and allow you to potentially rest some of it away. When you wake up you can handle the situation, and maybe even see it in a different light than you did before.

Eat Something

Food makes everything better! Take a break and give your body a little treat. It is scientifically proven that chocolate can calm you down. This can give you a minute to take a step back from everything you have going on, and even focus on something else for a bit.

Take A Bath/Shower

Showering or taking a bath is another great way to relax yourself and take a step back from what you might be experiencing. Take a minute just to focus on yourself, and a break from everything going on around you. Think of it as a safe space, no one can interrupt you here.

Speak to Someone

People can experience anxiety for no apparent reason, or what seems to be nothing. Sometimes we don’t know what’s going on, even if it is something we are experiencing personally. Having someone to talk to about your thoughts and the things you are feeling can be very beneficial. Finding someone you can confide in, whether it’s someone in your life, or someone you don’t really know, is a great resource to have incase a not-so-nice experience arises. Getting everything off of your chest and trying to find the root of the situation can really help. If there is no one in your life you trust enough, there are a variety of resources on and off campus that are there to help you every step of the way.

Don’t forget, you are not alone. Anxiety is something many people face, and as students, it is a lot more common than you’d think. There are so many people that understand what you’re going through and that want to help. These are a few things to remember, and guide you through those major anxiety attacks. However, there is always more help if your anxiety goes beyond what you can manage yourself. The next few years are going to be amazing, but also stressful. However, in the end, it will always be ok!
