Best Upcoming Movies to Watch Out for in 2016

Movies are an integral part of life for people of all ages, especially collegiettes. Between the constant flood of classes, assignments, and social outings, movies are the perfect way to treat yourself to a little (much needed) “me time”. Whether you’re cuddled up in bed watching Netflix, or out at the theatre with friends, movies never fail to hit the spot. Here are some of the most anticipated movies to look out for this coming year!

 

The Boy

In theatres January 22nd

This film is a must-see for horror fans. The Boy takes a modern twist on the age-old living doll plot line, bringing out both old and new traits of the traditional haunted doll story. The only downfall of this film is the inevitable fear of all things doll that follows.

Dirty Grandpa

In theatres January 22nd

Dirty Grandpa, featuring stars Zac Efron, Robert De Niro, Julianne Hough, and Aubrey Plaza, is sure to be a crowd pleaser. This comedy follows the adventures of uptight lawyer, Jason (Efron), and his… should I say, colourful, grandfather, Dick (De Niro), on a trip to Daytona Beach during the infamous ‘spring break’. Their trip is filled with all kinds of hilarious antics, most of which involve booze, partying, and girls. Still not convinced? I have two words for you – shirtless Efron.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

I’m sure everyone’s familiar with the timeless classic, Pride and Prejudice, but what about the best-selling adaptation Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? Whether you’ve read the book or not, this modern twist on the 1814 classic is sure to be filled with romance, drama, and of course badass zombie-slaying action. Get a glimpse of this perfect hybrid of action and romance here

How to be Single

In theatres February 12th

This upcoming comedy follows the lives of several single men and women living in NYC who all have one thing in common: they all have no idea HOW to ‘be single’. Featuring stars like Dakota Johnson, Leslie Mann, and everyone’s favourite horizontal runner Rebel Wilson, it’s safe to say How to be Single is soon to be a fan favourite.

Touched With Fire

In theatres February 12th

This indie romance film, based on the book by Kay Redfield Jamison, follows the blooming new love of two manic-depressive artists, played by Katie Holmes and Luke Kirby. After kindling new love during their stay in a psychiatric facility, things quickly heat up and become destructive.

Zoolander 2

In theatres February 12th

The long awaited return of ‘Blue Steel’ will be blessing our existence once again, and thank the heavens for that. Zoolander 2 gives us a look at our favourite male models, Derick Zoolander and Hansel (helander and HanselHan, years after their original conflict. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson work together to create another hilarious action-comedy, with the help of some awesome guest stars like Justin Bieber and Arianna Grande making appearances. Let’s hope this one will be just as quotable as the first!

Allegiant

In theatres March 18th

The third instalment of the Divergent trilogy will be released in two parts over two years (it’s like movie producers love to torture us). Allegiant picks up where Insurgent last left off. The government has finally been overthrown, and Tris and Four set off in search of what lies beyond the mysterious wall. Whether you’ve read the books or not, Allegiant is a must-see of 2016.

The Conjuring 2

In theatres June 10th

Calling all horror fans, the next chapter of quite possibly one of the best horror movies ever made is finally here! If The Conjuring terrified you in all the best ways possible, I’m sure you’ll be ecstatic to hear of its return in The Conjuring 2. In this guaranteed spine-chilling movie, the Warrens return to help a single mother and her four children rid their house, and their lives, of a demonic spirit; but, as I’m sure you’re already aware… complications ensue.

Finding Dory

In theatres June 17th

Probably the most anticipated sequel of all time, Finding Dory is finally coming and is sure to bring back childhood nostalgia by the wave. Everyone’s favourite forgetful fish/talk show host is making a comeback, and its sure make you feel like a kid again.

Suicide Squad

In theatres August 5th

This movie has received more than its fair share of hype, and the anticipation for its release is through the roof. Suicide Squad, starring Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Will Smith, and Cara Delevingne, takes a refreshing new twist on the comic-movie adaptation: one where the story is centered on the villains. Sure to be taking theatres by storm and breaking the box office, Suicide Squad’s release is something to be marked on your calendar ASAP. Judging by the trailers, it’s  guaranteed to live up to the hype.

If you have yet to see them, click immediately and brace yourself for the insane level of epic that is soon to come.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

In theatres November 18th

I’m sure all Harry Potter fans (AKA everyone, because if you don’t like Harry Potter, you’re pretty much irrelevant) were heart-broken when the series concluded 5 years ago, but fear not! J. K. Rowling has come to our rescue by orchestrating the resurrection of the magical realm of witches and wizards. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set in 1926 New York and will give its viewers a glance into the life of Newt Scamander, an esteemed magizoologist. Unfortunately, the film’s set release date is late in the year, so it’s still quite the wait.
