All the Tea Spilled in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Oprah Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

If you haven’t heard, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle went into detail this past week about their life and treatment by the Royal Family. From racist remarks to secret nuptials, the couple spilled all the tea in their interview with Oprah Winfrey. Here are a few things you need to know in case you missed it!

1. Meghan and Harry Got Married in Secret

Days before the huge royal wedding that was televised globally, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle exchanged vows three days before the televised big day. The ceremony was only between the couple, and it was officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, how romantic!

2. Meghan Once Contemplated Suicide

In her interview with Oprah, Meghan went into depth about her treatment by the UK press, as well as her life in the Royal Family. She revealed once she got to Nottingham Cottage, she had to turn over her passport, driver’s license and keys, along with other personal items, and she was only allowed to leave palace grounds with permission. Meghan revealed how lonely she felt, as at one point, she had only left the palace twice in four months. She also went into depth about how the UK tabloids constantly picked on many aspects of her life. Meghan described how no one has ever come to her defense, specifically when the tabloids claimed she made Kate Middleton cry, when in fact the opposite happened. Overall, Meghan felt silenced and alone which resulted in suicidal thoughts. When she sought help to get out of the palace, her request was declined in fear that it would look bad on the Royal Family. Thankfully, she is doing better now.

3. Members of the Royal Family Were Concerned About Archie’s Skin Colour

In one of the more shocking revelations from the interview, Harry and Meghan revealed that specific members of the Royal Family were concerned about how dark Archie would be when he was born. Harry, who heard the conversation, declined on revealing any names as Meghan agreed it would be very damaging to the family. However, even after Archie was born, there were racist undertones regarding his treatment. The couple was never asked to take an official photograph after he was born, which is a known tradition in the Royal Family dating back to when Prince William was born in 1982. Also, Archie was denied the title of Prince and any other royal title and was denied security. In fact, Prince Harry started paying for security for his own family once the couple discovered Archie would receive no security or help from the palace.

The tell-all interview with Oprah was a shocker as Prince Harry and Meghan shared all kinds of details. If you have a chance to check out the interview, it is available on CBS!
