Not fortunate enough to get your eight hours of shut-eye before heading to campus? Have no fear! Laurier has a wide variety of study spaces for every type of student; I have highlighted the best places on campus to lean back, shut your eyes, and catch up on some sleep before dragging yourself to your next class, or *gasp*, midterm.
1. The Solarium
The solarium is one of my top spots to study and nap on campus. Not only do they have comfortable lounge chairs, but it is almost always completely silent and is typically not as busy as other on-campus study areas. Not only have I cuddled up with a blanket (scarf) and dozed off between classes, but I have seen many other people do it too. If you are lucky enough to be in the solarium when it is raining, the sound of the rain will almost undoubtedly put you to sleep.
2. The 24 Hour Lounge
Although the 2-4 is typically a louder study space, it does have a number of chairs and couches to cozy up in. While it may be a busy location, most of the time the other students are studying at desks or in group study rooms, leaving the couches and chairs empty for you to enjoy.
3. The library
Prefer to sleep in private? Head up to silent seven and tuck yourself into a corner cubicle where you can hide from the world. Remember, the library is open 24 hours a day during finals, so there will be no one to wake you up and kick you out. I am not necessarily sure if that is a good thing, or a bad thing, but you can figure that out for yourself.
4. Student Lounge in the Music Building
While I have only ventured here once or twice, I have heard from some inside sources that this workspace has couches and chairs. The only downfall is that you are in the music building, which is not known for its quiet atmosphere. If you are lucky, maybe someone will serenade you to sleep.
5. The Tim’s line in the Science Building
Looking to get some coffee before your *study* session? You will likely be in line long enough to take a power nap. The downside? People typically are not too impressed when you hold up the line because you are snoozing.
6. Second Floor of Bricker Academic
If you are lucky enough to grab one of the few chairs on the second floor of Bricker Academic, you are in luck. Face one of these chairs towards the window so you are hidden from the rest of the student population and you will be ready for a nap in no time.
7. Geography Map Room
If you have ever taken a geography class in the Arts building, you have probably ventured to the Map library. Though I have only visited this room a few times, I do recall there being a few couches and chairs. Another bonus: it is not a very frequented place on campus, so you might have the place to yourself.
8. Dining Hall
Rumour has it that the back half of the dining hall (not the kitchen area, unfortunately) opens up half an hour after the dining hall closes for the night. From my experience, this is not a very popular study area, so it should be quiet and somewhat private.
Next time you need a few extra minutes of rest (or a few hours, we are not judging) take a few extra minutes to discover one of these campus study areas and prepare yourself for a wonderful snooze. Goodnight x!
