What It’s Like Going Into Your Final Year of University

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

University is one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. I’ve met some of the greatest people I know, and have also grown into myself because of the amazing teachers, classes and experiences that I’ve had.

Going into the fourth and final year of university is bittersweet for a number of reasons. It’s sad to know that this will be the last time for everything, but it’s also exciting to know that this chapter of my life is coming to an end while the future waits. It’s also sad to think that this is the beginning of a number of lasts, because when you’re going into fourth year you’re experiencing your final time for a number of things.

I just had my final first day of school, and knowing that I’ll never feel the rush of back to school again is a bit sad. For others, it’s exciting to know that you are at the end of a long journey that you’ve been working so hard to complete. Knowing that it’s the last time you’ll be doing something also makes you appreciate it that much more. Moving back into your home away from home for the last time is sad, but also satisfying. The small apartment space, or strange squeaky floors have a charm that they didn’t have before.

You’ll want to make the most of the experience that is ahead of you. Maybe in years past you missed out on events and opportunities, but in your final year it’s time to take advantage of everything that your school has left to offer. Homecoming, concerts, school traditions, and events won’t be something to skip this year, but rather something to do with your friends that you will remember for the rest of your life.

It’s also terrifying to think that your future career is waiting for you. Working toward a future is a lot different than actually having it in front of you. On the other hand, knowing you’re in a place where you can apply to your dream job is pretty amazing. We’ve all been putting in hard work for the past four years, and for our whole scholastic lives. Knowing that all you’ve been doing for so long is finally going to have a payoff is gratifying.

Realizing that you’ll be saying goodbye to all of your university friends at the end of the year is another difficult reality. We remember saying our goodbyes to our high school friends; but we also know that the best of those friends have stayed with us through our university experience. Although we may be saying goodbye to some friends at the end of this year we also know that the real friends will be with us for the rest of our lives. The end of university won’t change the fact that these people are your best friends. All in all, it’s bittersweet to think about the end of university.

It’s sad to realize that what we know is coming to an end, and that we’re going through some of our favourite things for the last time. It’s also so rewarding to be able to appreciate what we’ve accomplished, and how far we’ve come. Here’s to where we’re going.
