Meet the CC’s: Jahasia Cooper

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wells chapter.

Her Campus is an online resource for college women across the states and overseas and the HC Wells chapter is written by college women for Wellsian women to foster a better sense of sisterhood.

Name: Jahasia Cooper

Class Year: 2019 (Oddline)

Major: International Cultures

Minor: Communications Studies

Hometown: Brooklyn, NY

Jahasia Cooper is the Co-Campus Correspondent and Editor-in-Chief of the Her Campus Chapter at Wells.

Who is your (S)hero?

It’s so hard to choose one; Issa Rae, Michelle Obama, Lupita Nyong’o, Amandla Stenberg. These women are so gracious and inspiring and unapologetic. They’re changemakers and use their platform to make a positive impact on people’s lives.

What is your kryptonite?

I cannot stop buying natural hair products! I really cannot control myself. My boyfriend has to drag me away from the natural hair product aisles in Target because I’ll walk out with $30 (or more) worth of hair products. I would definitely classify myself as a product junky.

What is a stereotype you’d love to destroy?

Being a woman in a patriarchal society is hard, be a black woman in a post-racial patriarchal society is twice as hard. I’d love to disparage the myth that Black women are lazy or dependent on others because, in reality, we work twice as hard only to receive half of the ‘reward’. We’re called angry, emasculating and we’re hypersexualized in every way. But like every other woman of color, our skin color only gets us so far. But that’s what has made us so strong and resilient. Black women are the strongest women I know.

What do you love about Her Campus?

Her Campus is so empowering. Just knowing that HC is inspiring college women every day, inspires me to go above and beyond for our small chapter in Aurora haha! Wells is small but Wellsian women are so inspiring. Sisterhood has always been our strongest value and our HC chapter hopes to keep that going.

What is your dream job?

I’m passionate about so many things: learning languages, exploring cultures, digital media, traveling. Ideally, I’d love to be a Creative Director of a media company or even start up a media company and find a way to include all of my passions so that I don’t feel pressured to choose one.

Also, here’s my failed attempt at the Ariana Grande Stool Challenge :).

Jahasia Cooper graduated from Wells College with a BA in International Cultures and a minor in Communications Studies. Her favorite dessert is anything strawberry-flavored or with caramel and her kryptonite is natural hair products! You can catch her binge-watching Rick & Morty or at The Grind for her daily cup of joe!
