Fashion for Change’s Sixth Annual Fashion Show: So You Think You’ve Got Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

After several months of planning and organizing, the day had finally arrived for Fashion for Change to debut its 6th annual charity fashion show: So You Think You’ve Got Style

Not only did I have the pleasure of attending this year’s show but I was also fortunate enough to be one of the event managers on the wonderful event’s team! The event team was responsible for all other events outside the fashion show such as the Holiday Showcase, Theme Release, and the Fashion Show’s after party (for a recap of this year’s Theme Release click here)

Fashion for Change is not only one of UW’s biggest clubs (130 members and counting) but they also hold the title for hosting one of the largest annual student-run charity fashion shows in the Tri-City region.  Fashion for Change is a student-run club that focuses on promoting fashion and artistic expression in a variety of different avenues (as indicted on their website) and works in support of Free the Children. Specifically, Fashion for Change works with the Adopt a Village Campaign, and by 2015, they managed to raise over $70,000 in support of their village in Moyambra, Sierra Leone to help rebuild the community.

Each year the Fashion Show sells out at 700 seats, and this year was no exception. Inspired by the popular television show, So You Think You Can Dance, each scene opened up with a short pre-recorded interview video of some of the models and the choreographer of the particular scene. There were 13 scenes in total, including the choreographers’ showcase, and two guest showcases: UW Hip Hop, and UW’s very own male acappella group, Water Boys

Each choreographer was given their own artistic freedom to visually present their scene in whichever way they wanted to. This year’s inspirations for the scenes included things such as Growing Up, LGBT, East Meets West, Love, and Heartbreak (to name a few).

If you’re looking for a way to get involved on campus, then Fashion for Change is a great way to do so! You get the opportunity to work with other students from different programs/faculties on promoting fashion within an unlimited realm of artistic freedom, while supporting an amazing cause.
