End of January: Six Things to Look Into

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

The end of the month is already here… where in the heck has the time gone?! 2018 just started and yet here we are 1/3 done the semester. To set yourself up for a successful year, here are six things you should start looking into:

1. Preparing for Midterm Season

It is literally right around the corner, so do yourself a favour and get those study notes made ahead of time! Use the sunshine in the upcoming forecast to get yourself out of the house and into a cute local café. Now is also a great time to email or talk to your TAs and profs about the midterms. Not only will you get great information, you’ll also build your professional relationship with them, which will come in handy later in your university career – especially if post grad is in your future.

2. Apply for Spring/Fall 2018 On Campus Jobs

Yes, it’s true, job postings are already out! If you want to make a little extra money whilst studying your butt off, I highly recommend working on campus. On campus jobs are flexible with student schedules and you get holidays and weekends off (for the most part)! They have everything from Retail Services to a Feds Graphic Designer. Check out UW LEADS and see what’s available right now.

3. Job Fairs

Speaking of jobs… now is the time when job fairs are happening more frequently. If you’re looking for a co-op, full-time, or even part-time, it couldn’t hurt to get out and network in the KW Area and beyond. Check out the P4E Job Fair on February 7th in RIM Park from 10:00am – 3:30pm. More than 200 employers from across North America are coming to look for people to hire…aka YOU! If that fact alone doesn’t sell you on it, there’s free all-day transportation between campus and the park, free professional headshots, and coaching and professional development services from the Centre for Career Action prior to the event. 4. Book ‘Travel’ for Reading Week

If you’re not from the KW Area and don’t have a car, chances are you’ll be using another form of public transportation. Greyhound and VIA have ‘early bird’ pricing on travel options if you book far enough in advance. Reading Week is about 3 weeks away… try and get that bus or train booked and save some money to then treat yourself to fun plans back home!

5. Finals Schedule

On topic with things in the less immediate future, the final exam schedule gets released on February 2nd. Knowing this, you can combine Tip #1 and Tip #4 to get yourself ahead of the game! 2018 is all about being better, right?! New year, new organized you. Book those travel details for your summer plans, and add on to your midterm study notes to start getting ready for finals season.

6. Scholarships

These can be for Spring Term or, you guessed it, even Fall Term. Wouldn’t it be great to go into summer vacation knowing you have some of your tuition already covered? I certainly think so! Check out UW’s available scholarships, and join Yconic, and Scholarships Canada. Sign up for the email alerts before a scholarship deadline passes and get yourself some of that money you so deserve!

Best of luck this term and this year, Warriors. It’s never too early to plan things ahead!
