Finally, spring is here: new beginnings, more sunshine, and longer days. This means that summer is only a couple of short months away. The start of spring also marks a year of living amidst a pandemic. There is no doubt that the pandemic has impacted our lives in some negative ways, and that’s why it’s so important (now more than ever) to take some time to reflect on all of the good in your life.

Here are 10 things to be grateful for:

Good health

If this year taught us anything, it is to not take your good health for granted. The status of your health can change at any moment. It’s important to be mindful that not everyone has been fortunate enough to be COVID-safe, or free from other illnesses and diseases. Take a moment to be truly grateful for your health.

Modern medicine

We need to be grateful that a vaccine has been developed so quickly to help end the spread of the Coronavirus. More people are beginning to get vaccinated, and things are looking up. Be grateful for all of the health care workers, researchers, and scientists who have put endless amounts of time and effort into developing the vaccine and caring for those who are ill. Their efforts should not go unnoticed.

Having money in the bank

Even if the amount of money you have is not a lot or not as much as you would like to have, having some money makes you richer than a lot of people. It gives you some security and peace of mind to know that you can afford to feed, clothe, and shelter yourself.

Warmer weather and sunshine

You can look forward to truly enjoying all of the beautiful sunsets and sunrises, and being outside with the warmer temperatures that are on the way. Exercising outside will begin to get easier, and people’s moods will improve. Picture flowers blooming all around you and a warm breeze — it’s one of the best feelings, in my opinion.

Entertainment

I’m not sure that there are many people who can say that they would have survived the pandemic without entertainment. Specifically, entertainment in the form of Netflix allows you to watch your favourite shows and movies to escape from reality. Books are another great form of entertainment; they can be used for educational purposes, for enjoyment, or once again, to escape reality. And we can’t forget about music! For me, music is an escape and an instant mood-changer when I’m feeling down.

Pets

You can always count on pets to be there for you, and through this last year, you never had to worry if they had COVID or not! They truly are a huge support in your life and help give you some calmness as well as a distraction during these difficult times.

Education

I know a lot of us are tired of doing school work, especially online. It seems to be never-ending and it feels as if there is no break in sight. However, school has kept many of us busy during these uncertain times. It has also allowed us to keep some social connection, even if it is just through Zoom. We also have to remind ourselves that not everyone has the opportunity to get an education. And with that being said, we must be grateful for the opportunities we have.

Grocery stores

I don’t think I have ever appreciated grocery stores more than I do now. Throughout this pandemic, they have been one of the only things that has stayed essential and consistent. They are a way for us to get out of the house and, these days, they give us an excuse to dress up for something. We have had a lot of time on our hands to try out new recipes, and this wouldn’t be possible without grocery stores.

Family & friends

Social connection is so important right now, even though we have lost a lot of it. Use this as a sign to reach out to your family members and friends; send that text you have been meaning to send. A simple text message will make their day, and shows your gratitude for having family members and friends that support you through these difficult times.

Challenges

Lastly, be grateful for where you are today. The challenges that you face in life only make you stronger and better at adapting to any hardships that may come your way in the future. Look back and reflect on the last year; you’ll see how far you have come and all of the self-growth you have done. Here’s to new beginnings and reaching more of your goals, so when spring comes around next year, you can reflect once again on the amazing person you have become.

Expressing your gratitude is so important. It is necessary that we realize and honour the things we are grateful for, and that we don’t take anything for granted. Now more than ever, we are beginning to understand how crucial life is and how it can change in an instant. I challenge you to write down or think about three things you are grateful for each day, big or small.
