Fashion. Celebrities. Outfits. Extravagance.

These words all have something in common, and that something is just around the corner.

If you know, you know. And if you don’t, you’ve come to the right place. Look no further for everything you need to know about the biggest night of the year in fashion: the Met Gala.

What is the Met Gala?

Held every year on the first Monday in May, the Met Gala is always a night to remember. Whether you are someone at home watching (as most of us are) or one of the lucky attendees, it is an iconic event to say the least.

While the primary purpose of the Met Gala is to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, it is certainly no average fundraiser. Each year, hundreds of the world’s most influential icons in film, television, fashion, music, sports, and art are invited to attend the red carpet and a mysterious dinner, creating an event that garners significant amounts of money and attention.

Who Will Be There?

Unfortunately, not just anyone can put on a ballgown and waltz into the Met Gala. Rather, each guest must be specifically approved and invited by none other than Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. Even more than that, an invitation is just the first step – after being invited, individuals must still pay a rumored $50,000 per ticket this year, which is an increase from the $30,000 cost of previous years. With that said, you can absolutely still expect many of your favorite celebrities to be out and about, showing off their dazzling fashion on the red carpet. Frequent attendees in the past have included: Lady Gaga, Zendaya, Kim Kardashian, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Blake Lively, Rihanna, Timothee Chalamet, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Mendes, and many more.

The hosts of the Met Gala this year include: Chloe Fineman, La La Anthony, Derek Blasberg, and – returning for her second year – Emma Chamberlain.

Actress Penelope Cruz, Singer Dua Lipa, Actress Michaela Coel, and Tennis Player Roger Federer will also be the co-chairs of this year’s event.

What is This Year’s Theme?

Entitled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” this year’s theme will be paying tribute to influential fashion giant Karl Lagerfeld, who sadly passed away in 2019.

Both creating his own eponymous brand and working with esteemed fashion houses such as Chloé, Fendi, and – most famously – Chanel, Lagerfeld had a lengthy and lasting impact on the fashion industry. He was asked to begin designing for Chanel in 1982 and became creative director in 1983, during which time the brand was thought to be declining in quality and prestige. However, taking on the supposed challenge, Lagerfeld was able to revitalize and revolutionize Chanel into what people know and love today. Though he is best known for his work at Chanel, Lagerfeld truly had a unique and momentous effect on fashion as a whole, making him the perfect person to honor at this year’s Met Gala.

How Will People Dress?

Though it is difficult to know exactly what celebrities will show up wearing (or if they will stick to the theme at all), some predictions can still be made. Given Karl Lagerfeld’s numerous years in the fashion world, his designs – or looks inspired by his designs – will more than likely populate the red carpet.

Further, despite being known as a designer of signature looks, Lagerfeld also had his own signature outfit: a sleek black suit, white collared shirt, dark pants, dark sunglasses, and fingerless black gloves. I anticipate that this iconic outfit will be showcased, in one way or another, on this year’s red carpet.

In a similar vein, Lagerfeld also had a beloved cat named Choupette, who inspired the color “Choupette Blue” that debuted during his time at Chanel. Perhaps we will see inspiration taken from Choupette, in either the cat or color form, at this year’s gala as well.

Whether you have a passion for fashion or simply like to keep up to date with celebrity activities, the Met Gala is definitely an event you won’t want to miss.

Tune in on Monday, May 1st to this year’s Met Gala – and see if any of my predictions come true!
