How to (Actually) Stick to Your New Year’s Resolutions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Washington chapter.

Now that we’re a couple weeks into January, it’s time to see whether or not we’ll stick to our New Year’s Resolutions. I am definitely guilty of setting lofty goals each year just to fail quickly, claiming that “I’ll stick to it next time.” And of course, that just results in failed goals and dreams year after year. But this year, (so far; fingers crossed) I’ve managed to stay on top of my resolutions. And I know it’s only been a couple of weeks, but I’m taking what I can get and I’m proud. Here are some of my tips to stay on top of your resolutions and achieve your goals!

1. Make a List

This one seems pretty obvious and easy, however, there have been so many times where I’ve set a goal for myself only to end up forgetting what it was because I didn’t write it down. Make a list of all the goals you wish to accomplish by the end of the year and cross them off once they’re completed. It’s super rewarding and a nice visual way to see the progress you’ve made toward your goals over the course of the year!

2. Set Realistic Goals

When I was nine, I once made New Year’s Resolutions to become famous by becoming a Disney Channel star so that I could eventually meet and kiss Zac Efron from High School Musical. Now as great and magical as that sounds, it was definitely an unrealistic goal for nine year old Abby. When making your 2019 goals, make sure that you have goals that are realistic and achievable.

3. Don’t Beat Yourself Up

If you’re like me and have goals like work out at least X times a week or make healthier eating choices, don’t fret if you mess up or break your habit. When you’re setting long-term goals, know that the change you’re looking for probably isn’t going to happen overnight. Plus creating habits like working out and eating healthier can take months and even years to solidify, so don’t feel too guilty if you sneak a cookie every once in a while.

4. Praise Yourself

In addition to not being too hard on yourself, praise yourself when you do something that puts you closer towards your goal. Even if it’s something small, it’s okay to feel proud and good about the bit of progress you’ve made. Every little step matters in your journey and it’s totally warranted to celebrate each and every stride you make towards completing your goal.

Hopefully, these tips can help you make and achieve your 2019 goals!
