A Few Things That are Helping me Get Through Quarantine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Washington chapter.

As shelter in place continues to persist, I’ve come to incorporate a few things that are helping to keep me sane. Don’t get me wrong there are times that I’ll have a break down every now and then, which is totally fine (we could all use a good cry)! I’ve been enjoying having Zoom happy hours with friends, playing games online with them and binge-watching Netflix. However, all that screen time could get to be too much, especially when I have class and work meetings. So, below are some things that may help you get through this as well:

  • Working out: I know what you’re thinking hot girl summer is probably unlikely. But this is one of the things that I’ve changed in my day to day schedule that has been really beneficial. I work out three times a week for 30 minutes and as Elle Woods would say, “Endorphins make you happy.”  ALSO, UW Recreation is offering free virtual classes, check ‘em out!
  • Purchasing flowers: Not only do flowers add extra color to your space, they’re also pretty to look at. It’s also finally peony season! If you’ve never purchased peonies, I suggest you head to Trader Joes and get yourself some, or any other inexpensive floral bouquet. Or if you’re feeling like splurging on some flowers without going to the store check-out Farmgirl Flowers.
  • Candles, candles, candles: Who doesn’t enjoy a nice scented candle? Light an Anthropologie or Bath and Body Works candle and begin to feel relaxed.
  • Coloring books: The ultimate anti-screen distraction. Put on some music and get your creative juices flowing and buy yourself an adult coloring book whether it be a fancy Vogue themed one or swear words (yes those exist)! I also recommend twistable colored-pencils, that way you don’t have to deal with pencil shavings, unless you prefer makers and colored pens.
  • Walks along the Beach: Of course, we need to be mindful about where we go, but I’m all for going out to get some fresh air. We as humans are not mean to be cooped up for such long periods of time. If you decide to go out, I recommend heading to Golden Gardens. The parking lots are blocked off, but there’s street parking. Go listen to the waves crashing, soak in the nice breeze and remember to social distance.

I hope that these few things help you like they continue to help me. There are only so many times that you could bake banana bread or make dalgona whipped coffee. So, go get some fresh air, treat yourself to some pretty flowers and save your eyes from all that screen time.
