10 Ways to Stay Positive When It Seems that Everything is Falling Apart

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

From zoom classes to socially distanced get-togethers, the pandemic seems to be here to stay. Here are some ways to stay positive despite the monotony and strangeness of Fall 2020:

  1. Treat Yourself: Try a new flavor of ice cream, bake cookies, or eat candy. Having a sweet treat always puts me in a better mood and brightens my day.
  2. Grab some Coffee: Something about a good cup of coffee never fails to turn my day around. Whether it’s a pumpkin spice latte, cold brew, or good old black coffee, coffee always resets me and puts me in a good mood.
  3. Spend Time with Friends: While it may be difficult to arrange, we all feel refreshed after spending some time with our friends. Plan a picnic, zoom call, or socially distanced get together. I am sure you will feel more positive and recharged after!
  4. Create Good Vibes: Make the space you live in positive and happy – hang up pictures of loved ones, turn on fairy lights, or light a candle. Having positive vibes in my room always makes me feel more comfortable and happier.
  5. Workout: Go for a run in forest park, do a Chloe Ting workout, or just stretch. Moving your body makes you feel strong (and why shouldn’t it) while simultaneously treating your body.
  6. Dress Up: I know it seems that we’re all just wearing sweats and leggings 24/7, and while that may be true, it always feels great to put on a nice outfit, do your makeup, and feel confident. Even if it is just to stay in, when you feel great, you are more positive.
  7. Take a Break: Take some time off every few hours to just do nothing. Watch some Netflix, take a nap, or just lie in bed. Sometimes some unscheduled, unstructured time is all we need to feel recharged and rejuvenated.
  8. Laugh: There’s nothing like spontaneous laughs to brighten your mood. Watch a comedy skit (John Mulaney is my favorite), hang out with some friends, or even watch TikToks. Laughter can truly be the best medicine.
  9. Go for a Long Walk: Explore forest park, walk around campus, or to the loop. I always feel happier and more positive after spending time outside. Enjoy the fall weather and explore the Saint Louis area!
  10. Don’t Forget to Smile: Scientists have proved that smiling literally makes you feel happier. Embrace the feeling of awkwardness and make a point to smile at strangers. It will make you happier!
