Over break, I attended Harry Styles’ concert at Madison Square Garden, and one of the things that immediately caught my attention were the outfits worn by the fans. With that said, I’ve been to my fair share concerts, from country artists to Coldplay, and one thing that pretty much reigns true with all of them is that people will dress the part. However something felt different with Harry; no two outfits were quite alike. Some dressed in his iconic running outfits, others wore sequin skirts with a tie, and everyone seemed to channel their own meaning of what Harry represents for them. Somehow in the midst of all the colors and sequins, everyone felt connected by the same influence. This is the reason why I feel that Harry’s impact on the fashion world is so interesting. He doesn’t simply set a standard for what everyone should wear, but rather, encourages people to try new things and take risks with the pieces in their closet that they may have been too afraid to wear. Even the name of his Together, Together tour seems to capture this idea of a community coming together to celebrate who they truly are. So here are four ways Harry Styles has transformed the way we dress.
The Tie: A tie might not be a typical item you gravitate towards when dressing up, but Harry fans have transformed this piece in a fashionable way. Fans can be seen draping the tie around their shoulders to create an accent piece. They pair it with items as simple as a basic white tank and jeans. Some even weave the tie through the belt loop of their jeans as a way to elevate a generic piece of clothing. The addition of the tie almost challenges expectations and makes the piece feel less professional and more personal. The tie represents Harry’s ability to challenge traditional views on menswear and create a space where everyone is able to wear whatever they want and not feel judged.Â
Colorful and Structured Shirts: Many Harry fans have decided to branch out from the basic plain white button-down and lean into wearing bright colored, striped, and colored shirts. Once again, fans have taken over the office-wear narrative, and turned traditionally structured “work” shirts into something entirely of their own. Through pulling in bright colors like purples, reds, or even oranges, these pieces that were once associated with a professional setting can now be seen as a way for people to express their individuality. Fans can be seen to wear these shirts with a sequined skirt, or a longer shirt worn as a dress with a belt and loafers. In a more casual way, some have paired the bright colored shirt with a basic black skirt and knee high boots. With all that said, Harry’s influence on fashion can be seen to inspire people to not be afraid to break traditional boundaries of the fashion world and express their true individuality.
Statement Graphic Tees: Unlike the previously discussed trends, not all Harry-inspired outfits must be bold and include every possible color one could think of. A vintage-style graphic tee paired with your favorite jeans can still feel personal and encompass the “Harry image”. As I walked through the Garden, I noticed fans wearing shirts that had their favorite Harry Styles quotes, memorable moments, or even pictures they had taken of Harry themselves. These were not your basic concert T-shirts as they all felt personal and represent what Harry meant to all of them. They paired these tees with sequined skirts, jeans, or even a cute midi slip skirt with loafers. I loved how each shirt felt like it told a different story and reflected what Harry meant to them. It made me realize that fans can share the same love for their favorite artist while also wearing something completely different.
Loafers and Long Socks: Loafers paired with long socks are another way fans are challenging traditional views about how certain pieces should be worn. Rather than keep loafers with a more tailored and formal outfit, fans can be seen to style them with black athletic shorts and a button up, graphic tees, or even a basic tank and denim skirt. The contrast between the classic shoe and a more casual or non-generic piece makes the look feel almost unexplained and once again a way for fans to express themselves. This transitions from a polished or masculine look to a more everyday outfit once again symbolizes how Harry encourages people to look beyond the original purpose of a clothing item and urge them to find their own meaning for them. He provides fans with the support to find their own path and not look towards a certain “inspiration” to guide them. Through mixing unexpected pieces, fans are able to show their own personal style and set their own rules in the fashion world.Â
Ultimately, the Harry Styles effect goes far beyond ties, sequin, colorful shirts, and what pair of shoes to wear. Instead, it is about making fashion feel more personal to you and giving everyone the space to experiment with pieces in their closet that they were previously too scared to wear outside their homes. Harry’s fans represent a community where no one needs to look the same to feel connected. For these reasons, Harry has had such a significant impact on fashion as he embodies what fashion is truly about: individuality and the freedom to challenge expectations. He proves that fashion isn’t about following certain rules and fitting into a certain style, but about allowing yourself to experiment and take risks. Most importantly, his influence proves how fashion can bring people together while also giving everyone the freedom to embrace their individuality through what they choose to wear.
