Ten Best Healthy Mid-Afternoon Snacks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Every day at around 3:30 or 4:00 PM, I feel myself needing a little snack. This time comes for all of us at different times depending on our class schedules. There is always a time when you sit in your room and don’t want to make the trek down to the Pit or Benson. Here are some yummy (and healthy) snacks to have in your room to satisfy the hunger between Pit swipes.

  1. Your Favorite Type of Granola – not only does this pair so well with little to-go yogurts, but I’ve found that a couple handfuls of my favorite granola go a long way. My personal favorite is the Chocolate-Almond granola from Trader Joe’s.
  2. Dark Chocolate Covered Nuts – pick your favorite nut and keep a good pack of those in reach. They satisfy a little sugar craving and don’t hurt your tummy. I usually go for the almonds
  3. Wheat Thins and Peanut (or Almond) Butter – the peanut butter is optional, but the Wheat Thins are a classic favorite salty cracker. And sometimes a spoonful of peanut butter just hits differently
  4. Popcorn – if you’re a microwave popcorn type of gal, go for it. I am more of a Skinny Pop or Snap Crackle Pop girl myself, but it all works and tastes oh so good.
  5. Cliff Bar – or any type of protein bar really. These are a classic and always do the trick. They are my favorite for right before a quick trip to Sutton Gym or for between classes.
  6. Carrots and Humus – my roommate lives off this combo. It’ll fill you up and leave you feeling super healthy and energized.
  7. Tortilla Chips and Salsa – this can be fun for a little movie or game night with friends in addition to a satisfying snack. It’s up to you how you use this, but a bag of Tostitos can really hit the spot at any time.
  8. Apples – when you buy them and eat them at the right time, they are an unbeatable snack. This is another opportunity to use that peanut or almond as well.
  9. Gluten Free Pretzels – hear me out: they’re better than regular pretzels. Don’t knock them until you try them.
  10. M&Ms – peanut, caramel, mini, pretzel, pick your poison. Grab a handful and don’t look back. Sometimes you just got to eat the chocolate and there’s not one thing wrong with that.
