My top 5 classes so far

I am about to complete my fourth semester of college. So far, I have taken 22 classes and have really enjoyed them for the most part. I expect this list to change a lot by this time next year—I’m taking many exciting classes next semester alone—but for now, here are my top five classes I’ve taken at Virginia Tech.

5. Greek Art and Architecture

I’m taking this class this semester for my minor, and it has been really interesting. I love learning how art reflects cultural values at the time. There aren’t many assignments, and you get several drops, which has been nice. We ended with a book club, and I loved getting to read and discuss literature outside of an English class.

4. Advanced Writing and Research

The name of this class sounds a little intimidating, but it has actually been so fun. My professor is a lovely person, and the readings we do are very interesting. The whole semester is dedicated to building and shaping a research paper. I typically do not like writing research papers, but I had a lot of fun with this one.

3. Creative Writing: Fiction

I am forever a fiction girlie. I love writing and reading short stories, so this class felt like a break rather than an actual class. I have been in a bit of a writing slump lately, so I need a class like this one again to get me out of it.

2. Editing a Literary Journal

This was a field study class, and it was so much fun. I highly recommend it if you’re interested in publishing. You basically intern at a real literary journal and select creative writing that will be published. The class is very small—I only had seven other students—so you’ll find a fun and creative community.

1. Community Writing

This has been my favorite class so far, and I’m not sure anything will be able to top it. We met once a week in our regular classroom and once a week on-site at a primary or secondary school in Blacksburg or Christiansburg, where we taught creative writing techniques. I was placed in a second-grade class, and you’d be surprised how creative and well-written the students were. I highly recommend this class if you are interested in teaching or creative writing.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the classes I get to take in college. I’m not going to lie, some of them sound fake—like those fake college course videos people post on TikTok where they make up the most absurd sounding class—but I have learned a lot from each and every one of them.
