Of course, there’s nothing wrong with going to a state college as an out-of-state student. College is fun, regardless of where you go. However, it may feel a bit weird if your friends and peers know more about your new place of residence than you do, or if you live a considerably far distance from school, then there might be a slight feeling of disconnect. Along with these feelings, here are a few more you may have if you’re not from the area…
1. Not knowing the area well
When you hear your friends talk to each other about places in the city or state, or if someone asks you about a specific place, you kind of just do this…
I call this the I-have-no-idea-where-that-is or the “sorry man, couldn’t tell you” shrug
2. People asking, “What Made You Choose (Insert School Here)?”
Which to me, roughly translates to, “What are you doing here?”
It may not sound like a big deal, but after having so many random conversations with adults, it gets a little tiring. Oh, also, “That’s a loooong way from here” could be used as an alternative version. Anyway, we all go to schools for different reasons — it just happens that my university has really good specialized schools in it. Any more questions?
3. Not being able to see friends over break
It kind of sucks to not be able to see some of your friends who live in-state. Depending on the distance, you may be able to see them, which you should be thankful for!
However, if your friends’ travel plans involve a lot of time and money, then they may save the trip. A college student budget can only go so far.
4. Differences in slang
It’s usually never bad enough that you can’t understand someone, but it’s still pretty funny to hear.
…Then you remember that the slang words that you use with people back home probably sound just as ridiculous.
5. Weather differences
Too cold, too warm or just right? Whatever weather you’re accustomed to, your friends and peers may not be. So don’t feel bad if you overdressed, or didn’t dress appropriately according to others. You’re trying your best!
Maybe check the weather before you go out, just to be sure.
No matter where you’re coming from, what matters the most are the wonderful experiences you’ll have while you’re away. Here’s to a great time wherever you are!
