An Open Letter To My Grandma

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Dear Barimama,

I love you so much. Thank you for always taking care of me, thank you for being my best friend, thank you for being my biggest supporter, but most importantly, thank you for being my role model. You have been with me since day one through the hardest battles and the most life-changing events. I can come to you with any problem and I know that you’ll always support me, and give me the best advice as possible.

I wanted to take a moment and thank you for everything you’ve done for me. You have made me the woman I am today with your continuous love and dedication. Thank you for telling me stories when I couldn’t sleep as a child, watching Bollywood movies with me, shopping till the mall closes, teaching me the alphabet when I was younger, making me soup when I am sick, giving me advice when I didn’t know what to do and so much more. Being at college makes me miss you so much but I know that you’re still my number one supporter. You always believed in me no matter how indecisive I was about my professional career as a child – from a dancer to an engineer to a lawyer and now to a doctor. You taught me that no matter what profession I choose, it is important to work hard for what I believe in and still remain down to earth.

Barimama, you taught me the value of education and how important it is to stand up for yourself, especially as a female in a male-dominated society. It is because of you that I want to dream high and work hard to achieve my goals. I want to make you proud one day with my achievements the way you always made me proud. Thank you for being my partner in crime and my ride or die. Did you know that my favorite part about coming home for the weekend is seeing you? I love our car rides with blasting music, eating tortilla chips and guacamole on our patio, forcing you to try new foods and drinks and window shopping at our local outlet. Any day spent with you is the best.

I am constantly in awe with your hard-working and loving personality. You taught me how to be humble, wise, thoughtful and how to stand by my beliefs no matter what anyone else said. As cheesy as this sounds, in my book, you are the definition of a boss b*tch and I will always strive to be as amazing as you. I know I don’t say this often enough but thank you for being in my life. Your patience, love, generosity and empathy have turned me into the girl I am today. I couldn’t imagine it any other way.

I’m sorry I don’t get a chance to come home as often as you’d like but I am grateful for our hour-long facetime sessions every day. I love you.

Love,

Your best friend
