A Letter of Appreciation for the Dad Bod

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

To the dear, underappreciated eye-candy that is a dad bod,

Hey, sexy! That’s right, I said sexy. In a time where people love to pit the attractiveness of body types against each other, you are sometimes overlooked compared to the toned, Calvin Klein model physique. But you shouldn’t be! You are attractive- hella attractive, in fact, and should be applauded alongside every other male body type, you gorgeous thing, you.

As a woman who is self-conscious about her own body, I understand the stigmas associated with upholding the perfect body type. Of course, it is not exactly the same for women and men, but the idea that a person’s attractiveness is determined by how often they go to the gym or how slim their figure is running wrongfully rampant.

I, for one, love you. You are cute and fun, and I think your belly is just as hot as abs. You are the best to snuggle (like a teddy bear), and it’s a beautiful thing when you dress up because it’s a well-known fact that button-downs look amazing when they have a little more to hug.

Speaking of being hot, let’s talk about some of Hollywoodland’s most recognizable dad bods. Those fine fellas, like Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, are some of the world’s most handsome and successful men, and they continuously rock the beloved dad bod. Matt Damon has even been named People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” and all are widely recognized for their heartthrob status. You, therefore, are amongst beautiful, talented, god-like Adonises of men who many other men would kill to be compared to. Dad bods, unite!

That being said, I hope you realize how amazing you are, dad bod. It would break my heart to see you feeling less-than because of how our society ranks appearances, despite your famous comrades. Trust me, much like Stacy’s mom, you’ve got it goin’ on.

Always remember too, that although you are as hunky as they come, it is, of course, what’s on the inside that counts. Not to overdo it on the cheese factor, but an awesome personality beats out any body type any day of the week. However, a guy who has both a fantastic personality and confidently rocks his dad bod always has a bit more of an advantage in my book. *wink*

Men with dad bods, thank you for blessing us unworthy people of the Earth with your attractive selves. Thank you for giving the cuddlers amongst us a chance to blissfully cozy up close to you. Thank you for showing the world that, like women, men also have certain standards to live up to and, like women, they are still attractive if they don’t.

Dad bods, here’s to you!
