If you played with Barbie’s, or dolls in general you might understand how special this moment is. There are many different types of dolls but Barbie reigns over all. This company has influences on millions of children and other doll companies. In recent years, Barbie has been criticized for having a negative effect on children. For example the project done by a student at Hamilton College, recreating a Barbie to reflect a human being.
Long story short if Barbie was a human she would look pretty scary. These unrealistic looking dolls have been linked to causing issues in young girls like eating disorders and body dysmorphia. This past week Barbie released a new line of dolls. Dolls with different skin colors, eye colors, and body types.
It is important for little girls to be able to relate to, or feel like they’re being represented. Young girls playing with the dolls can learn that there are so many types of people and each one can be beautiful. Although that image is constantly seen throughout the media.
