Natural Hair Care: 5 Products That Define Your Curls!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

At times it may seem impossible to develop the perfect twist-out or braid-out due to the disagreement between what we want to do with our hair and what our hair wants to do with itself. Today may be the day our hair would like to cooperate with our intentions. However, it may also be the day for all mayhem to break loose. One type of product you can always count on to make your styling a little bit easier is a curl enhancing creme! Many brands have a form of this product, but not all live up to par. The products below have been tailored for the naturalista in search of her new best friend!

1. Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding

     Price

  • Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding 1 oz Packet – $2.00
  • Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding 2 oz – $7.00

Review: All of Miss Jessie’s products smell amazing! This curly pudding is good for shining and defining your existing curl pattern. The only con to this product is its price! Aside from ordering Miss Jessie’s products from the site, missjessies.com, they can be found in stores such as Target and Walmart.

Review: This curl enhancing smoothie is an absolute favorite of mine! It does well with taming frizz and giving your curls that extra bounce. The con to using this product is that your hair must be soaking wet in order to evenly disperse it throughout your strands. The product will not spread properly on dry or slightly dampened hair.

3. Motions Naturally You Define My Curls Creme

Review: Aside from defining your curls, this product can be used when styling your hair into slick buns or ponytails! Apply a small amount of this moisturizing creme to produce a sleek and shiny look. Another pro of this product is its affordability compared to products used for similar purposes. A con of this product is that it contains the ingredient mineral oil which is known to clog the pores.

4. Cantu Coconut Curling Creme

  • Cantu Coconut Curling Cream 12 oz – $5.99

Ingredients: Water (Aqua, Eau), Canola Oil, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-20, Fragrance (Parfum), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Ceteth-20, Glycol Stearate, Petrolatum, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Mangifera Indica (Seed) Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Macadamia Ternifolia (Macadamia) Seed Oil, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Seed Oil, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Oil, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Silk Amino Acids, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Laminara Cloustoni (Sea Kelp) Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract, PEG-75, Polyquaternium-10, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.

Review: Cantu’s Coconut Curling Cream is extremely light on your hair! If your hair is really dense, then this is the product for you! Instead of it taking an entire day or two for your hair to absorb the product, it will at most take a good night’s sleep! Utilizing this curling creme while preparing your twist out will produce the defined and elongated curls we long for!

5. Creme of Nature Argan Oil Pudding Perfection

Review: When compared to the products noted above, a perfect sense of thickness is achieved. Creme of Nature’s Argan Oil Pudding Perfection delivers a consistency that does not run or drip! A con of this product, however, is that it cannot be combined with too many products. Being that this pudding is the farthest thing from sparse, it may cause build up when using this product alongside another.

The most difficult times of having natural hair come from prepping a look that delivers unfavorable results. The products listed above will make your time spent worthwhile!  A tip for you during your journey is to be careful when applying products that include detrimental ingredients. It is recommended that you always read your labels!
