Importance of Taking Off Your Makeup Before Bed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

When I’m exhausted late at night, the last thing I want to do is take off my makeup before bed. However, I never let myself go to bed without taking it off first! Not only is it good for your own comfort, it’s essentially a healthy habit to have. There are select people who can go without taking off their makeup at night, and they wake up looking like a goddess still! I’m most definitely not one of those people. The feeling of my eyelashes being stuck together and the sight of my face makeup on my pillow is not something I can deal with. Those people might look ready for the day, but their skin is certainly crying for help! So if you wear your makeup to bed, here’s a couple reasons to kick that habit to the curb!

1. Sleeping with your makeup on is essentially an opportunity for bacteria to hang out and create a breeding ground. Throughout the day, we encounter so much dirt, germs and gross yucky stuff on our face and body. It gathers from what we touch and transfers through surfaces such as phones. This ground for bacteria could lead to cold sores and breakouts!

2.  Your pores are clogged! If you constantly have makeup on your face, your pores will not have a chance to breathe. This hinders your skin’s ability to produce proper vitamins and oils you need to glow and look youthful. It can also dry out your skin and make it look dull.

3. You will age faster! Not taking off your makeup can cause premature aging. During the day, your skin accumulates oxidative stress. If you do not allow your skin to recover, those wrinkles will appear a lot sooner than expected. Plus, wrinkle creams are so expensive. Save yourself that money until you really need it!

4. Leaving on mascara and eyeliner can clog the follicles and pores around the eyes. It can also cause your lashes to become brittle and fall out. Some people even have a bad habit of picking at their eyelashes. Clogged pores and follicles around the eye means a stye can form! Those are super annoying to deal with and very obvious physically.

5. Your pillow and stuff that comes in contact with your face will be filthy. You will get stains on your sheets and pillows. No one wants to hang out on your bed and see a whole bunch of mascara and foundation on your stuff. Plus, it accumulates and certainly cannot be sanitary. It also leads to more frequent laundry sessions. If you’re a college student, that can be costly.

Taking the step of taking off your makeup and cleaning your skin is super beneficial. There’s nothing like feeling super clean before bed. Let your skin breathe and prevent aging! Make sure you take off your makeup every night. No excuses!
