Creating Tranquility in Your Living Space

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

If you’ve ever shared a room with anyone—even if it was just for a short vacation—you will come to realize that there is a lot to appreciate about having your own personal space. Unfortunately, being a college student doesn’t always allow us such a luxury. Not only is personal space something we may have to go without, but we’re also at an awkward age where our homes are not actually our homes. Sometimes it’s living with relatives, sometimes it’s paying rent or housing, but where we are right now probably doesn’t belong to us. That alone is an unsettling fact that can make living situations uncomfortable because they feel temporary or not impersonal. You will learn that it’s all about what you do to make your space feel like it’s YOUR space and your own personal paradise (whether you’re there for a year or four).

Start with buying a nice room deodorizer

Nothing says comfort like walking into a room that smells good. The scent can come from a Glade plug-in, a Bath Body Works Wallflower (my personal favorite), or even an essential oils diffuser. Whatever your deodorizer of choice is, make sure that it isn’t overwhelming and simply gives you warm and fuzzy feelings of happiness.

Then clean up

Not to sound mom-ish or anything, but there’s something about decluttering that can do wonders for the soul. Somehow, in the midst of the chaos in your everyday life, you may find yourself living amongst empty coffee cups and clothes that could be dirty and could be clean. Once you throw away the things you don’t need and put away the things that you do, you will feel much more situated.

Decorate

String lights, pillows, canvases, pictures, whatever will make your little heart happy, it should be all around your room! Target has some very unique and chic décor and they have pretty decent sales too, but wherever you decide to shop, do so responsibly. There is such thing as over-decorating and then your room will become a little museum (unless that’s the vibe you’re going for). Also, you can totally decorate your space with decorations that are relevant to the upcoming season or holiday if you’re really in the spirit! If does nothing else, it will make you feel better!

Rearrange the room

As long as your furniture isn’t nailed to the ground, you have total creative freedom! Not only should you be concerned with decorating, but the way your things are set up around the room matters too. Something that seems as insignificant as moving a lamp can do the trick too. Don’t stop arranging until it feels right to you! Make sure whoever helps you is an understanding angel.

Until we all get nice, spacious, wonderful houses of our own, we have to make do with our current situations. Once you change your surroundings to fit you, it seems like everything is that much better. Studying, sleeping, and eating can be that much more enjoyable

My name is Nia which means purpose in Swahili and I am currently finding it and trying to live up to it. I'm a senior at Valdosta State University, my major is Communication Disorders--translation: I am an aspiring Speech-Language Pathologist. Nothing makes me happier than the people I love, affection, a good book, a blank journal, and the beach. I'm sure I left a few things off of the list, but you get the point.
