5 of the Best Dog Breeds for a College Apartment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

One of the best things about living off campus besides the kitchen, freedom, and privacy is that you may have the option to get a pet. If you’re a dog lover like me, getting a “fur baby” has probably been something you’ve been thinking about doing since they day you moved into your apartment. Since we do live in apartments, surrounded by neighbors who more than likely have to study, work, and take early morning classes, it’s best to consider dogs that won’t be much of a disturbance to your neighbors. For those of you who are really thinking about getting a pup, here are some of the best dogs to consider.

1. Italian Greyhound

You know that cute little grey dog that’s always in Jenna Marbles’ YouTube videos? In case you’ve never watched her videos or may not have noticed, her little Italian Greyhound is a sweet, quiet little dog. Normally, he doesn’t even look at the camera while she’s filming her videos. That’s what makes Italian Greyhounds the perfect dog is that they’re very bashful, yet super sweet. The only thing to consider is that they can be a bit hard-headed, so housetraining may be a big difficult. (Watch out for those damage charges!)

2. Collie

Collies are a great choice for those of you who want a dog that’s not too small, but not too big either. Another great thing about Collies is that they usually only make noise when they have to. For instance, if there’s someone lurking around your apartment that your dog isn’t familiar with, he/she is more than likely going to make you aware of it. Collies are a great choice for an apartment because they’ll meet the size limit that your apartment managers may require; but be prepared—their hair can have the tendency to get on EVERYTHING.

3. Shar-Pei

As soon as you can overlook their wrinkles, you see that Shar-Peis also make great dogs for apartments. They are fairly small, but not super tiny, and are known to be great watch dogs.

4. Golden Retriever

If the apartment you live in allows larger dog breeds, Golden Retrievers are the perfect pick! While it may seem as though they’d be really noisy dogs, they’re one of the quietest breeds out there. Even better, they are extremely playful and friendly. These are great for those of you who want a dog you can do fun activities with but can still keep the noise down at the same time.

5. Whippet

Whippets are small and extremely adorable! With them, the only thing you may have to worry about is that they may knock something over or break something. These are perfect dogs for those of you looking for a little “cuddle buddy.” They love to be right under you and to feel the presence of a human being. But no worries—while they’re not under you, you don’t have to worry about them making too much noise because they are very quiet.
