Self-care Products you’ll Want to Combat the Winter Weather

Living in southern Ontario, we just experienced our first snowfall of the season. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the snow and it is important for the sake of the Earth that we get snow, but my body is not ready for the cold yet. Oftentimes, I find my self-care routine struggling simply due to the change in weather. My lips crack, my hands are always dry, and my hair is always pulled up because of the fizziness from the wind. Each winter I typically learn about a new product that helps protect my skin, hair, or makeup from the snow, wind, and rain. Winter after winter, I have finally fully curated the perfect cold weather artillery to combat cracked lips, dry skin, and frizzy hair.

The Optimal Lip-care Routine

I find it absolutely vital that I have a good lip-care system to prevent dry and cracking lips. The first step is a good exfoliant. I like to use a lip sugar scrub from Lush, but anything intended for gentle lips is a good alternative. I try to  use a lip scrub every other day. On days I use a lip scrub, I also like to use an overnight lip mask. Recently I discovered the Laneige Lip Mask and I really haven’t looked back. A good amount is essential to last throughout the night. It’s also important to keep your lips hydrated and protected throughout the day, which is why I recommend you also use your favourite lip balm, whichever brand works for you!

Eye Patches

Whenever I have to walk in the colder weather, my face always takes most of the blow. If I am outside for long enough, my cheeks get red and patchy, and my eyes are practically windburned. To combat these effects, I try to use eye patches when I have them with me. I’ve used gel eye masks before and I find that they work as well. I prefer to use Lush eye pads as they are often infused with different natural ingredients to help reduce redness and inflammation. They also help to rejuvenate the delicate skin around the eyes. Soothing eye drops can also help to relieve dry eyes if needed.

Moisturising Body Wash

This recommendation  is a no-brainer. A moisturising body wash or bar of soap can really help to keep your skin nourished during these less-than-ideal conditions. Again, whichever one is your favourite is best. Personally, whenever I can find them for sale, I like to use the Bath and Body Works moisturizing body wash; I just find it so luxurious-feeling for my skin.

Strong, Heavy-duty Lotion

Beyond the shower, it is still important to keep your skin hydrated and nourished during these winter months. Moisturising your skin can also help prevent cracks, flakes, and dryness. I really like to use Nivea Crème or Working Hands, but you may want something lighter or more heavy-duty based on your skin type. It is important that you pick out a lotion that best suits your needs and preferences.

Hair Masks and Scalp Treatments

When it’s cold and windy outside, I find that my hair takes the brunt of the damage. It is blown every which way and I end up looking like a frayed mophead. Regular hair maintenance is always important for preserving hair in the winter, but to go the extra mile, I use a scalp treatment every week and a hair mask when I have one. Whichever you prefer works, but I personally love to use the Lush Roots Scalp Treatment.

Hi I'm Liv! I am currently studying Forensic Science at the University of Windsor. I love being outside, going on hikes, kayaking, rowing, and goodness I could just go on and on. I am often listening to music, listening to a good podcast, watching a film, or talking (arguing) about any one of those!
