I’m going to tell you why you should never, and I mean never, do zoom classes in your bed.

First, you need to know some things about me at the time of this event. I usually do classes from my desk in my bedroom, but this was the week of my period so my cramps were physically killing me. I had no idea where the heating pad was, so I had to get by on ibuprofen that barely works. I also had to commute to school before this class, so I was exhausted from driving for an hour. I decided that maybe today I should just do my zoom class in bed so I could be more comfortable. I don’t even need to have my mic or camera on for said class, so I had to basically just watch and listen. Another thing about myself, I sometimes fall asleep listening to youtube videos. So as the class started and I listened to my professor talk in my bed, I got sleepy. I thought nothing of it. As time went on I was barely keeping my eyes open. I thought, oh, maybe if I close my eyes I’ll be fine.

I woke up an hour later in my bed. I scrambled to look at my class to see what I missed and what the hell was going on. Nothing. Everyone’s camera was off and the professor wasn’t talking. I tried to look at the past chat messages but it didn’t help much. I waited and waited for my professor to say something. Anything. It seemed like it was work time now, but I had no clue what we were supposed to be working on. I waited until the end of class when he asked if anyone had any questions. Now, I couldn’t just say “Hey what did I miss, I was sleeping”. And I couldn’t ask what the assignment was because I would look like an idiot asking. I went later to go check the class recording. Nothing. There was no recording. I was screwed. I had no friends in the class, so I couldn’t ask anyone besides the professor himself for help.

So I emailed him. I had to lie and state that my internet was acting up and my audio wasn’t working, so I wanted the class recording. I got a reply. It was an automatic response stating he was busy and wouldn’t reply until the following day. Part of the assignment was due the next day, so I was on a time crunch. I had to try to figure out on my own what to do from the assignment instructions. I seemed to do well since the next class he didn’t have many compliants about my work.

The lesson here is, don’t do classes in your bed. You will fall asleep and miss important shit. You might get lucky and just watch the class recording. Or you’ll have to figure things out on your own. If you don’t feel good, just don’t go to class and let your professor know. Don’t do what I did, because you will have a panic attack and feel so dumb. Just do class on the couch, at your desk, or somewhere you can’t take a snooze.
