Alex Miller has clearly made an impact on many students who she has been impacted by as well. A Resident Assistant since she was a Sophomore, Alex hopes to continue impacting many lives in her future…

Year in school: Senior

Expected graduation date: May, 2016

Majors/minors: Interpersonal Communications/Psychology

Hometown: Middleton, WI

Where are you an Resident Assistant at? How long have you been an R.A.?

I am currently an R.A. in Laux Hall, and I have been an R.A. for 2 years. Last year, I was an R.A. in Orris White Hall.

What do you enjoy most about being an R.A.?

I enjoy the opportunity to be able to meet first year students the day they enter UW-La Crosse, and then see how much they grow by the time they leave the hall on the last day of school.

What do you enjoy least?

The thing I enjoy the least is having to confront uncomfortable situations with residents that I know and having the residents act differently around you after that.

What made you decide to become an R.A.?

My R.A. my freshman and sophomore year changed my life and made my years in the residence halls so much better than they would have been with out them. I wanted to be able to do that for others as well.

What have you learned or gained as an R.A.?

I have learned so much as an R.A. The biggest thing I have learned, however, is how much a first year student can surprise you. Many students come in and act as if they are too cool to be with the R.As., but by the end of the year, it’s surprising how many residents would call their R.As. friends.

I have gained so many friendships out of this job. I never thought I would find some of my best friends out of the people I work with or even the residents I provide for. That’s the biggest thing I have gained out of this job.

What other positions or opportunities have sprung from your position as R.A.?

From this position, I have been able to serve on the hiring committee for new Hall Directors. This was a huge opportunity for me as I got to see what the hiring process looks like for housing professionals before I go through that myself in the coming years.

What else are you involved with on/off campus?

I am, also, the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) President.

Who is your biggest inspiration/role model?

My biggest inspiration is my dad, Dave Miller. He started a business from scratch and worked his way up to making a lot of his dreams come true. I hope to be able to make my dreams come true as well.

What is your dream job after college?

After college, I hope to be able to go to grad school for Higher Education Administration. I would like to specifically work in housing and become a hall director for a residence hall.
