6 Ways to Save the Planet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Lax chapter.

Earth Day is just a reminder to be mindful EVERYDAY about how we are affecting the environment and that we should be doing things each day to help protect and save our planet. We only have one planet and it’s time to stop denying that we are self-destructing, because the truth is deniable but it’s not avoidable. That being said, here are a few tips that you can adopt in order to do your part to help conserve our planet:

1. Go Vegan:

Try going vegan or vegetarian once a week, you’d be surprised by how energized you feel, and as a bonus, it’s great for the environment!

2. Take shorter showers:

I know we all love to sing our little hearts out in the shower, but keep in mind, the longer your ‘Heart Will Go On’ the more water you’re consuming.  This being said let’s try to keep the showers shorter and the water flowin’!

3. Don’t let the water run when brushing your teeth:

This is a simple way to help conserve water.  Try and be mindful when you’re brushing your teeth by turning the water on and off in between brushes.  Easy enough, right?

4. Recycle, Recycle, Recycle!:

Take a few seconds before throwing something in the trash to determine whether it can be recycled or not.

5. Shop with reusable bags:

Next time you head to the grocery store to do your weekly shopping, don’t forget to bring your reusable bags.  By bringing your reusable bags with you, you’re reducing the amount of paper/plastic you’re consuming and doing a service to Mother Nature. This is a great habit to get into!

6. Try to walk or bike whenever and wherever you can, rather than taking a bus or car that creates exhaust:

As college students, this advice should be pretty easy to follow!  Instead of taking the bus or driving a car, take time and leave for class a few minutes early and enjoy the weather by taking a nice relaxing stroll to campus! Not to mention, it’s a great way to get your workout in!
